Family health insurance for a long-stay visa application

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

A family policy can cover a spouse and children together, but every applicant's visa file must show the insurance. So one plan is fine; the key is that each person's application shows they are covered. Here is how families handle it for a France or Italy long-stay visa.

One policy, but every file needs to show cover

Each visa application is judged on its own file, so each family member's file has to show valid cover. A single family policy can provide that for everyone, as long as the paperwork makes each person's cover clear to the consulate reading their file.

How a family plan is structured

A family plan usually covers the main applicant plus spouse and dependent children under one policy. Ask the insurer how it evidences each person for a visa: either a certificate that names everyone, or a certificate per applicant. Either can work, provided each file shows the cover.

The oldest applicant sets the age rules

New-applicant age limits are set by the oldest person on the policy, so the eldest adult determines which cover levels are open to the family. Our quote form asks for the oldest applicant's age for exactly this reason.

Get one quote for the household

You do not need separate quotes per person. Tell us the household, and we quote the family together. Cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States, and pre-existing conditions are excluded.

Get a certificate that meets the published rule

Tell us your destination, visa, and who’s moving. Our team reviews it against the current requirement and calls you with a quote — no obligation.

Before you request a quote: cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States, and pre-existing conditions are not covered — including conditions you did not know about. We say this up front so a quote is worth your time.

Common questions

Can one family policy cover the whole visa application?

A family policy can cover spouse and children together, but each applicant's visa file must show the insurance. One plan is fine; make sure each person's cover is evidenced.

Do children need separate insurance for the visa?

Children can be covered under a family plan, but each child's visa file still needs to show they are covered. Ask the insurer how it evidences each person.

Does each family member need their own certificate?

Not always. Some insurers issue one certificate naming everyone; others issue one per applicant. Either works if each visa file shows the cover.

How does age affect a family policy?

New-applicant age limits are set by the oldest person on the policy, so the eldest adult determines which cover levels the family can choose.
