The AFM: the nine digits Greece asks for before anything else
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
What the AFM is for
Greek administration runs on the AFM the way Spain runs on the NIE, Portugal on the NIF and Italy on the codice fiscale: leases, utility contracts, bank accounts, car purchases and any dealing with the tax system want the number first. It's separate from the AMKA — that's social security; the AFM is tax. New arrivals typically need both, AFM first.

The official route
gov.gr's service page sets out the path: submit the request electronically — entering personal details, your identification document and contact details — then complete identification via videoconference or by physically attending the Tax Office (DOY) of your choice. The video route runs on myAADElive with an AADE representative, served directly or by appointment. The page states applications are open to natural persons, irrespective of their tax residence, and a representative with specific authorisation can act for you.

60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyThe pass key, and getting the order right
The same application issues the pass key (kleidarithmos) — the credential that activates your account on the tax platform, where returns, certificates and every later interaction live. Practical order for a mover: passport and entry documents ready, AFM + pass key first, then bank account, lease and utilities in whatever order the landlord demands, with the AMKA alongside once work or healthcare enters the picture.
