Going autónomo: Spain's two-desk start line

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Registering as autónomo runs through two administrations. The tax side: the AEAT's census declaration — Modelo 036 — registering you as an empresario or professional before activity starts. The social side: the alta in RETA, Spain's self-employed regime, handled online through Social Security's import@ss portal, which also issues your Social Security number if you lack one. Both files exist before your first invoice does.

Desk one: the AEAT census (Modelo 036)

Spain's tax agency keeps a census of business people, professionals and withholders, and joining it is the formal start of self-employment: the declaración censal de alta on Modelo 036, filed electronically or in person, before activity begins. The AEAT's own procedure page groups the alta, later modification and eventual baja under one flow, with a practical completion guide alongside — the form covers your activity heading, VAT position and withholding obligations in one filing.

Foreign starters hit one prerequisite first: the NIE, since nothing censal happens without a tax identity. Whether you must also register regionally for IAE-class matters depends on activity and turnover — descriptive detail the AEAT flow points at; this page stays out of tax-advice territory by design.

Desk two: RETA, through import@ss

Social Security's import@ss portal is the modern front door: its own description of the section covers obtaining your Social Security number, and managing your alta as a self-employed worker — the entry into RETA, the special regime for autónomos. The portal's practical guide for autónomos walks the alta, later data modifications and the contribution mechanics that follow.

The two desks are one project: the RETA alta and the censal alta reference each other's dates, and the working rule promoted by both administrations is to file before activity starts, not after the first client pays. Sequence for a newcomer: NIE → Modelo 036 → RETA alta → invoicing.

The insurance seam in a Spanish freelance life

RETA contributions buy you into Spain's public system — the healthcare registration follows the alta — which changes the insurance question from the visa era: the residence permit that got you here carried Spain's private-cover rule; the autónomo life adds public coverage on top. Many keep private cover for speed and English-language service; the honest read of both layers, against your permit type and renewal calendar, is the checker's job:

Common questions

How do I register as autónomo in Spain?

Two registrations: the AEAT's census declaration on Modelo 036 (electronically or in person, before activity starts) and the RETA alta through Social Security's import@ss portal, which can also issue your Social Security number. An NIE is the prerequisite for both.

Which comes first, the tax alta or RETA?

Both administrations expect registration before activity begins, and the filings reference each other. The practical sequence: NIE, then Modelo 036, then the RETA alta, then your first invoice.

Does becoming autónomo change my health cover?

RETA contributions bring public-system coverage, layered on whatever private policy your residence route required. Many autónomos keep both; what your permit's renewals still require depends on your route — worth checking rather than assuming.
