Bringing a dog to Spain from the USA: the sequence that works
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The EU half: five steps, in enforced order
The EU sequence, in the order the rules force: 1) Microchip first. The chip must be implanted (or read) before the rabies vaccination — the EU page is explicit that a vaccine given before the chip does not count. 2) Rabies vaccination, with the animal at least 12 weeks old at the date of vaccination, then the standard waiting period before travel. 3) No blood-titre test for US pets — the United States is on the EU's published list of territories whose pets enter without a rabies antibody titration test (unlisted-country arrivals need one, at ≥0.5 IU/ml). 4) The EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued in the ten days before entry — by sea, extended by the length of the voyage. 5) Enter at a designated travellers' point of entry for documentary and identity checks.
The US-specific good news, at its legal source: the United States and its territories appear on the EU's exemption list (Implementing Regulation 577/2013), so American dogs skip the rabies blood-titre test that unlisted countries face. Up to five animals travel per movement before commercial rules apply.

The Spain half: entry points and arrival
Spain's national role in the EU scheme is operational: it designates the travellers' points of entry where the documentary and identity checks happen — in practice the major international airports, Madrid and Barcelona above all — and its agriculture ministry (MAPA) publishes the current designated list. Check your arrival airport against that list when booking, not after: the point-of-entry requirement is part of the rulebook, and a routing through a non-designated regional airport is the kind of error a cheap connection buys.
The document work on the US side runs through a USDA-accredited veterinarian — the certificate chain is their routine — and the golden sequencing rule bears repeating because it voids more files than anything else: the microchip must precede the rabies vaccination, and the certificate must be issued inside the ten days before entry.
60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyAfter arrival: the dog's life, and yours
Once resident, a local vet issues the EU pet passport, and future European travel with the dog becomes a page-flip. Watch the one intra-EU exception — tapeworm treatment before Finland, Ireland or Malta — and keep the rabies booster diarised like a permit renewal, because in this system it is one.
The dog's file is usually the easy half of the move. The humans' file — the visa route, the income evidence, and the health-insurance certificate checked line by line — is the rest of this site: the Spain hub carries the insurance rule in writing, and the mover guide carries the sequence around it.
