Germany national visa: the paperwork in order
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The rule in writing
“For Germany’s national visa, health insurance must include the benefits statutory-insured persons are entitled to under §11(1–3) SGB V, and the contract must be open-ended — no expiry or cancellation clauses tied to age, employment, or residence status. Travel insurance is insufficient.”

What the national visa is and who it fits
A national (D) visa is Germany’s long-stay route, issued for stays beyond 90 days and applied for from your home country. The common paths for movers without a German employer are the freelance and self-employment routes; there are also work and study routes with their own conditions.
Whichever applies, the insurance standard is the same, and it is where files most often stall. See the freelance visa route and the §11 SGB V rule explained.
The file, item by item
Germany wants your purpose documented — a freelance plan and evidence of clients, an employment contract, or a study place — alongside proof you can support yourself, accommodation, and health insurance meeting the statutory benchmark.
The insurance element deserves more attention than applicants usually give it, because there is no figure to check off. It is the only part of the file that fails on a structural quality rather than a missing document.
60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyThe order to follow
Sequence matters here as much as the documents themselves, and the mistake that costs people an appointment is almost always order rather than content.
Document your purpose first, since everything else supports it and it is the slowest piece. Sort accommodation and means evidence next. Appointment slots at German missions are a known bottleneck, so treat the booking as a scheduling constraint on the whole file rather than the last step.
Arrange health insurance late among your documents rather than early — timed close to your appointment date rather than bought months ahead and left to go stale. Certificates carry dates, and a certificate whose validity starts before your intended entry, or expires inside your stated stay, fails on timing rather than on cover.
The insurance benchmark, and the clause that fails files
Germany publishes no euro minimum. Cover must include the benefits statutory-insured persons are entitled to under §11(1–3) SGB V — treatment, prevention and rehabilitation — and travel insurance is insufficient by a wide margin, since it is written for trips and does not attempt prevention or rehabilitation at all.
The second half of the rule fails more applicants than the first: the contract must be open-ended, with no expiry and no cancellation clauses tied to age, employment or residence status. Many expat and nomad products are sold in fixed twelve or twenty-four month terms that simply end. Find the renewal terms in your policy wording before the appointment — if the contract expires on a date rather than renewing at each anniversary, that is the refusal waiting to happen. See why German files get refused.
After you arrive: Anmeldung and the system question
After you move in, you register your address with the Anmeldung, and several other steps depend on having done it.
Then comes the longer question of which system you end up in: statutory (GKV) or private (PKV), decided by work status and income rather than preference. If you arrive on a student or job-seeker route, or before employment starts, there is a window before statutory membership begins that still needs valid cover. See the public vs private calculator, student bridge cover and job-seeker bridge cover.
Costs you can fix now, and the quote call
The one part of this file you can lock in before anything else is the cost of the insurance itself. On the 2026 rate card, Essential cover starts from $392 per adult per year and children age 0 to 17 sit at a flat $308 per year. Prices are per person per year on annual billing; your exact rate depends on age and cover level. For Germany specifically, the budget Essential tier is a named-perils accident and emergency plan and is unlikely to satisfy an equivalence benchmark, so it is rarely the right comparison here.
Remember what you are leaving: US and UK domestic plans are generally not structured to cover treatment abroad for residents, so this is replacement cover rather than a top-up. Cover can start the same day with no medical exam, and there is a 14-day cooling-off period. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, including ones you did not know about, and cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States.
Covered Abroad is an introducer, not the insurer. A person checks your certificate wording against the current published rule before you buy, and calls you with a quote with no obligation. See real Germany prices by age, compare levels at pricing, or run an existing policy through the free policy check.
