Grocery prices in Greece, and the surprise in the dairy aisle
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
Cheap country, dearer groceries
Eurostat sets the EU average at 100 and measures each country against it. For Greece in 2025:
- Overall price level — 84.0. The lowest of the ten European countries this site covers, below Portugal (85.3) and Spain (91.1).
- Food and non-alcoholic beverages — 105.3. Above the EU average, and fourth-dearest of the ten.
That 21.3-point gap is the widest of any country we cover, and it runs the opposite way to the Netherlands. Greece's lower cost of living is real, but it lives in services, priced at 77.2, and housing — not in the supermarket.

Where the money goes at the till
Eurostat's food categories show a sharp split. The good news is fresh produce:
- Fruit — 84.9, the cheapest of the ten countries we cover
- Vegetables — 93.2, also the cheapest of the ten
- Meat — 96.8, below the EU average
And the categories that push the total up:
- Dairy and eggs — 129.9, the dearest of the ten
- Alcohol — 154.0, the dearest of the ten by a wide margin
- Sugar and sweets 129.1, fish and seafood 112.7, soft drinks 111.8
It cuts against the usual picture of Greek food. The produce is as good value as you'd hope; the packaged, processed and imported end of the shop is where Greek prices climb.

Check my policyUsing this in a moving budget
A price level index compares what the same basket costs across countries, taxes included. It isn't a record of what households spend, and it leaves rent out entirely.
For someone planning a move, the Greek figures point to a budget where food takes a bigger share than the overall "cheap Greece" story suggests, while services and day-to-day living run well below EU levels. A diet built around fresh fruit, vegetables and local meat lines up with the cheapest categories; one built around dairy, sweets and imported drinks lines up with the dearest.
International health cover doesn't follow local prices — it is priced on your age and the level of cover you choose, wherever in Greece you settle.
