What your insurance certificate must say for Malta's Nomad Permit
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The rule in writing
“Malta’s Nomad Residence Permit requires health insurance covering the EU (including Malta) and the UK, for one full year with the premium paid in advance. Travel insurance is not accepted — but a foreign health policy that meets the requirements is explicitly acceptable.”

The lines your caseworker actually reads
The Nomad Residence Permit application is assessed by Residency Malta Agency, and the caseworker checks the certificate line by line. Territory must read the EU (including Malta) and the UK; not Schengen, not Malta alone. The term must be a full year. The premium must show as paid in advance, not billed monthly. The policy type must be health insurance; travel insurance is not accepted. And the name on the certificate must match your passport exactly.
The two traps in certificate wording
Two lines cause most rejections. The first is territory: insurers often default to a Schengen-only or Malta-only certificate, which falls short of the EU-plus-UK wording the agency needs. The second is the prepaid year: monthly-billing schedules are common in travel insurance, but the certificate needs to show a single prepaid annual term, not instalments. Both traps are easy to miss because the underlying policy can be compliant; it's the certificate wording that goes wrong.

A foreign policy meeting the requirements is explicitly acceptable to Residency Malta Agency, but the certificate must be worded for the agency, not assumed correct.
