Netherlands visa processing times: the published clocks, route by route

The rule in writing
“Anyone insured by operation of law under the Wlz — in practice residents of the Netherlands, and non-residents taxed on employment performed there — must take out a Dutch zorgverzekering. Residence or Dutch-taxed work is the trigger, not nationality and not the residence permit. A non-working spouse who becomes resident is caught with no Dutch income at all.”

The rule in writing
“The well-known "four months" is a retroactivity window, not a grace period. The obligation bites the day it arises; a policy taken out within four months back-dates to that day, so no gap exists and the intervening premiums are still owed.”

The decision periods, route by route
The published IND decision periods for the routes an American or Briton actually uses, all read on 20 August 2026:
| Route | Decision period | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Highly skilled migrant | 90 days (shorter in some situations) | €423 (employer pays) |
| EU Blue Card | 30 days via recognised sponsors; 45–90 otherwise | €423 |
| Self-employed (incl. DAFT) | 90 days, extendable to 6 months where expert advice is needed | €423 |
| Study | 60 days | €254 |
| Partner / family | 90 days | €254 |
| Orientation year | Not stated on the page as read | €254 (2026 applications) |
Two honest cautions. These are maximum statutory windows, not promises of speed — a file can clear in a fraction of them, and the self-employed route's extension clause means a points-tested or treaty case can legitimately run past its headline number. And where the page did not state a period, our table says so rather than borrowing a number from a forum.

The recognised-sponsor shortcut is the real lever
The single biggest determinant of Dutch processing speed is not the route — it is whether a recognised sponsor stands behind the application. The highly skilled migrant route runs entirely through one: the employer files for the MVV and residence permit together, and the machinery is built for throughput. The Blue Card shows the same effect numerically — 30 days through a recognised sponsor against 45 to 90 without.
The routes with no sponsor behind them are the slow lane by design. Self-employed applications carry the 90-day headline plus the expert-advice extension, because RVO assessment or treaty verification happens inside the window. The practical reading for a DAFT applicant: file complete — the capital already in the business account, the accountant's verification attached, KVK registration fresh — because an incomplete treaty file is what converts 90 days into six months.
One clock runs before any of these: the MVV entry visa, once granted, is valid 90 days — the window in which you must actually travel. Students additionally book the embassy appointment within three months of approval.

60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyThe clocks that start after approval
Approval starts three more timers, and the second two are the ones that cost money when missed.
Five days: staying longer than four months, you register with your municipality within five days of arriving. This is the gate to everything — the BRP entry produces your BSN automatically, and without the BSN there is no bank account, no payroll and no Dutch insurance purchase.
Three months: the TB test, where your nationality requires one, must be done within three months of the permit being issued.
Four months: the health insurance window — and it is retroactivity, not grace. A Dutch basic policy bought inside four months back-dates to the day the duty arose, with the back premiums owed; outside it, the uninsured gap stands, enforcement runs to a €529.74 fine in 2026, and the medical bills from the gap stay yours.
Sequence them and the whole move is: decision period → 90-day MVV travel window → 5-day registration → BSN → policy inside 4 months → TB test inside 3. Each feeds the next, which is why the expensive mistakes are almost always sequencing mistakes rather than rejection.

What can stretch a file, and what cannot be known
Worth naming what our sources do and do not establish. The decision periods above are the IND's own published maxima per route page. What no official page publishes is the typical time for your consulate, your quarter, your file quality — so we do not invent averages, and we would treat any site quoting "usually 3 weeks" without a source with suspicion.
The stretchers that are documented: the self-employed expert-advice extension to six months; incomplete files, which stop the clock rather than running it; and the orientation-year page's silence on a decision period, which we report as silence.
The one delay with a silver lining: while an IND decision is outstanding, government.nl states Dutch health insurance cannot be bought at all — so a long decision period is precisely the stretch where private cover is not a choice but the only instrument available. The Netherlands hub carries that rule and the rest in writing.
