Renewing the permesso di soggiorno: a window that depends on your card

The 90/60/30 windows, from the Polizia di Stato
The rule most guides flatten into “60 days” is actually graded. The state police's English-language guidance puts it plainly: when your permit approaches expiry, apply for renewal at least 90 days before the expiry date if the permesso is valid for two years, 60 days before if it is valid for one year, and 30 days before in all other cases. The same page anchors the other fact people miss: a permit's validity matches the visa it was issued on — up to two years for some routes, one year or less for others — so your renewal window is set by the card in your pocket, not by a universal number.
Italy joins the pattern our other renewal guides show: France opens four months early, the Netherlands will not accept an early file at all, and Spain runs a two-month window with positive silence. Italy's contribution is the graded clock.

Where the file goes: the kit, the post office, the questura
Italian renewals run through the channel the interior ministry built with the postal service: for most permit types the renewal application travels via the postal kit lodged at authorised post offices, with fingerprinting and collection at the questura; some categories file directly with the questura. The ministry-promoted immigration portal — run with Poste Italiane and the patronati — is the official companion for procedure details, and the patronati (free assistance offices) are the practical help most renewers actually use.
Between filing and the new card, the postal receipt is the document that carries you — the Italian cousin of France's récépissé — and processing times vary by questura enough that filing at the top of your window is the only version of the process without anxiety in it.

Check my policyThe insurance line inside the Italian file
Renewal re-reads the conditions your permesso was granted on — and for the routes that required health cover, the renewal file asks the question again. Our permesso renewal-insurance guide covers exactly which documents satisfy that line, including the voluntary-SSN and private-cover paths, and the Italy hub carries the underlying rules as cited. A policy that lapsed mid-year is precisely the kind of gap a questura file surfaces:
