Retirement age in Austria: 65 for men, and a rising table for women

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

oesterreich.gv.at sets the standard retirement age at 65 for men. For women it was 60 and, from 2024, rises by six months each year until 2033: 60.5 for women born January to June 1964, 61 for July to December 1964, and so on in half-year steps to 65 for women born after 30 June 1968. You also need at least 180 months of insurance.

The women's table

The federal portal quotes the law directly: beginning on 1 January 2024, the age limit for old-age pensions for women is increased by six months on 1 January each year until 2033. By date of birth:

  • 1 January to 30 June 1964: 60.5
  • 1 July to 31 December 1964: 61
  • 1 January to 30 June 1965: 61.5
  • 1 July to 31 December 1965: 62
  • 1 January to 30 June 1966: 62.5
  • 1 July to 31 December 1966: 63
  • 1 January to 30 June 1967: 63.5
  • 1 July to 31 December 1967: 64
  • 1 January to 30 June 1968: 64.5
  • Born after 30 June 1968: 65

For men the standard age stays at 65. The end state is one age for everyone: 65 for women as of 2033.

The 180-month minimum

Reaching the age is not enough on its own. The portal lists the insurance record you need, with alternatives:

  • 180 months of insurance (15 years) within the last 360 calendar months (30 years), or
  • 180 months of contributions from compulsory or voluntary insurance, whenever they were earned, or
  • 300 months of insurance (25 years) up to the pension start date.

The portal adds a further alternative: at least 180 months of insurance, of which at least 84 months (7 years) were in gainful employment.

The portal also notes that the pension is claimed by application, by the end of the month before you retire.

For movers with mixed careers

EU-insured periods count toward qualifying under the coordination rules our multi-country pension guide explains, and Austria pays the Austrian share on its own record.

If your retirement plan includes private health cover abroad, timing matters: Regency's international health plans accept new applicants up to age 70, and Essential Health up to 80. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and cover is governed by the policy wording. We are an insurance introducer, not an insurer.

Common questions

What is the retirement age in Austria?

65 for men. For women it depends on the date of birth: 60 for women born before 1964, then rising in half-year steps from 60.5 for those born in the first half of 1964 to 65 for women born after 30 June 1968.

When will the retirement age for women in Austria be 65?

The portal says the increase runs by six months on 1 January each year from 2024 until 2033, when 65 applies to women as it already does to men. By birth date, 65 applies to women born after 30 June 1968.

How many years do I need to qualify for an Austrian pension?

At least 180 months of insurance within the last 30 years, or 180 months of contributions at any time, or 300 months of insurance up to the pension start date, according to oesterreich.gv.at.

Is the Austrian pension paid automatically?

No. The portal states that you claim the right to the pension by application, by the end of the month before retirement, so the date you reach the age is not the date money arrives unless you have applied.
