Retirement age in Italy: 67, and moving

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

INPS sets the age for the old-age pension (pensione di vecchiaia) at 67 in 2026, together with at least 20 years of contributions. The age then moves with life expectancy: INPS says 67 years and 1 month in 2027 and 67 years and 3 months in 2028. Italy publishes the requirement by calendar year, so the year you claim matters, not only the year you were born.

The age, year by year

INPS's old-age pension sheet gives the age requirement as:

  • 2026: 67 years
  • 2027: 67 years and 1 month
  • 2028: 67 years and 3 months

INPS's March 2026 notice explains the mechanism: the 2027-2028 life-expectancy adjustment is applied gradually, with requirements rising by one month in 2027 and by three months in 2028.

The 20-year contribution rule

Age alone does not open the old-age pension. INPS pairs the age requirement with a contribution requirement of at least 20 years, and the detailed rules differ depending on whether you have contributions from before 31 December 1995 or only from 1 January 1996.

That date split is worth knowing if you worked in Italy decades ago: your early record may put you under a different set of rules from someone who started contributing later.

Retiring on contributions alone

Italy also has an early pension based on length of contributions rather than age. INPS's notice gives the requirement as 42 years and 11 months for men and 41 years and 11 months for women in 2027, and 43 years and 1 month for men and 42 years and 1 month for women in 2028.

The same notice says workers in arduous and heavy categories, such as night-shift workers and assembly-line staff, are not subject to the adjustment for 2027-2028.

For movers with mixed careers

EU-insured periods count toward qualifying under the coordination rules our multi-country pension guide explains. If you are moving to Italy to retire on a foreign pension rather than an Italian one, the age here does not govern you at all. Our guide to Italy's 7% regime for pensioners covers the tax side.

If your retirement plan includes private health cover abroad, timing matters: Regency's international health plans accept new applicants up to age 70, and Essential Health up to 80. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and cover is governed by the policy wording. We are an insurance introducer, not an insurer.

Common questions

What is the retirement age in Italy in 2027?

67 years and 1 month for the old-age pension, according to INPS, up from 67 in 2026. It rises again to 67 years and 3 months in 2028, as the life-expectancy adjustment is applied in two steps.

How many years of contributions do I need in Italy?

At least 20 years for the old-age pension, on top of the age requirement. INPS applies different detailed rules depending on whether your contributions began before 31 December 1995 or only from 1 January 1996.

Can I retire early in Italy?

Yes, on contributions alone. INPS gives the 2027 requirement as 42 years and 11 months of contributions for men and 41 years and 11 months for women. For 2028 the figures are 43 years and 1 month, and 42 years and 1 month.

Does the Italian retirement age apply to a foreign pension?

No. It governs the Italian state pension only. If you move to Italy and draw a pension from another country, that country's rules decide when it starts. Italian tax rules are a separate question.
