Retirement age in the Netherlands: the AOW table

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

The SVB pays the Dutch state pension (AOW) from an age set by your date of birth. Born 1 March 1957 to 31 December 1960, it is 67; born 1 January 1961 to 30 September 1964, 67 years and 3 months. For anyone born from 1 October 1964 the SVB publishes expected ages only, rising to 70 for the latest cohorts, and says they are not yet final.

The established ages

The SVB states that the AOW ages for everyone born before 1 October 1964 have been established:

  • Born 1 June 1956 to 28 February 1957: 66 years and 10 months
  • Born 1 March 1957 to 31 December 1960: 67 years
  • Born 1 January 1961 to 30 September 1964: 67 years and 3 months

The expected ages, and why they can move

For people born on or after 1 October 1964, the SVB publishes expected ages and says plainly that they are not yet final:

  • 1 October 1966 to 30 June 1970: 67 years and 6 months
  • 1 July 1970 to 31 March 1973: 67 years and 9 months
  • 1 April 1973 to 31 December 1975: 68 years
  • 1 January 1976 to 30 September 1978: 68 years and 3 months
  • 1 October 1978 to 30 June 1982: 68 years and 6 months
  • 1 July 1982 to 31 March 1985: 68 years and 9 months
  • 1 April 1985 to 31 December 1988: 69 years
  • 1 January 1989 to 30 September 1991: 69 years and 3 months
  • 1 October 1991 to 30 June 1995: 69 years and 6 months
  • 1 July 1995 to 31 March 1999: 69 years and 9 months
  • 1 April 1999 to 31 December 2000: 70 years

Read the later rows as a planning estimate. The SVB's own page offers a date-of-birth calculator, and that is the figure to check before you fix a date.

For movers with mixed careers

The AOW age only tells you when the Dutch state pension starts. How much of it you receive, and how years abroad interact with it, is a separate question, and EU-insured periods follow the coordination rules our multi-country pension guide explains. Our guide to retiring to the Netherlands covers the move itself.

If your retirement plan includes private health cover abroad, timing matters: Regency's international health plans accept new applicants up to age 70, and Essential Health up to 80. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and cover is governed by the policy wording. We are an insurance introducer, not an insurer.

Cover underwritten by Regency Assurance · every rule on this site cited and dated · a person calls back within one business day.

Before you request a quote: cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States, and pre-existing conditions are not covered — including conditions you did not know about. We say this up front so a quote is worth your time.

Common questions

What is the AOW pension age?

It depends on your date of birth. The SVB lists 67 for people born from 1 March 1957 to 31 December 1960, and 67 years and 3 months for those born from 1 January 1961 to 30 September 1964. Later cohorts have expected ages only.

Is the Dutch retirement age going up to 70?

On the SVB's expected table, yes, for people born between 1 April 1999 and 31 December 2000. The SVB says the ages for everyone born on or after 1 October 1964 are not yet final, so treat 70 as a projection.

What is the AOW age if I was born in 1965?

The SVB's expected age for anyone born from 1 October 1964 to 30 September 1966 is 67 years and 3 months. It is marked as expected rather than established, so check the SVB's calculator nearer the date.

How do I find my exact AOW date?

The SVB's AOW age page has a calculator: enter your date of birth and it returns your AOW pension age. For anyone born before 1 October 1964 the result is established; for later birth dates it is the current expectation.
