Shipping household goods to Spain: what the AEAT actually requires

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Spain applies the EU's transfer-of-residence relief through the Agencia Tributaria: personal goods come in free of import duty and VAT if you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months before the move and the goods have been in your possession for at least 6 months — 12 months for motor vehicles, trailers, caravans, transportable homes, pleasure boats and private aircraft. The relief attaches to moving your habitual residence to Spain, not to the shipment alone.

The two clocks the AEAT runs

The Agencia Tributaria's transfer-of-residence page sets two look-back tests. The residence clock: you must have had your habitual residence outside the Community for at least 12 consecutive months before the transfer, and be moving — or intending to move — that residence to Spain. The possession clock: the imported personal goods must have been in your possession for at least 6 months before the move — with the longer 12-month rule for motor vehicles, trailers, caravans, transportable dwellings, pleasure boats and private aircraft, the categories people most often buy just before leaving.

Both clocks look backward from the move, which makes them planning facts, not paperwork facts: the relief is decided by what you did in the year before the container ships.

Spain's version of an EU-wide relief

This is the same transfer-of-residence relief France administers through its own customs fiche — our ToR relief guide covers the framework through the French worked example, including the single-inventory discipline and the no-disposal period that follow the duty-free entry. Each member state's agency runs its own procedure, so the AEAT's page and forms are the ones a Spain-bound shipment actually answers to; conditions continue after import, and the AEAT page details them.

The practical reading for a US-to-Spain move: keep purchase receipts proving the 6-month possession, don't buy the car on the way out, and file against the AEAT's procedure rather than a mover's summary of it.

The container and the visa, on one calendar

The 12-month residence test ends where the Spanish paperwork begins — empadronamiento, the NIE, and the residence permit whose insurance line the Spain hub documents from the cited sources. Shipping timelines are long enough that the goods file and the visa file overlap for months; the checklist keeps both in one printable order:

Common questions

Can I ship my household to Spain duty-free?

Yes, under the transfer-of-residence relief the AEAT administers: at least 12 consecutive months of residence outside the EU before the move, goods in your possession at least 6 months, and the move of your habitual residence to Spain. Import duty and VAT are relieved on qualifying personal goods.

Does the relief cover my car?

Vehicles carry the longer clock: motor vehicles, trailers, caravans, transportable homes, pleasure boats and private aircraft must have been in your possession for 12 months, not 6, to enter under the exemption.

Is Spain's relief different from France's?

Same EU framework, national administration: the tests read alike, but the AEAT's procedure and forms govern a Spanish move. Our transfer-of-residence guide covers the framework; this page carries Spain's own figures from the AEAT.
