Transferring unemployment benefits abroad: the U2, the clocks, the catches

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Per the Commission's guidance, you can keep receiving your unemployment benefit for at least 3 months while job-hunting in another EU country — up to a maximum of 6, depending on the institution paying it. Conditions: you're wholly unemployed and entitled to benefits at home, you've been registered with your home employment services for at least 4 weeks (exceptions possible), and you carry a U2 form — valid for one country at a time.

The export right: 3 months, maybe 6

The Commission's Your Europe page sets the frame: you can carry on receiving your unemployment benefit for at least 3 months from the EU country where you were last working — and up to a maximum of 6 months, depending on the institution paying your benefit. The gate conditions: you must be wholly unemployed (not partially or intermittently) and entitled to benefits in the country where you became unemployed.

Before you leave: the 4 weeks and the U2

Per the same page, before leaving you must have been registered as an unemployed jobseeker with the employment services in the country where you became unemployed for at least 4 weeks (exceptions can be made), and apply to your national employment services for a U2 form (formerly E303) — the authorisation to export your benefits. The catch the page prints in a warning box: this authorisation is valid for one country only. Job-hunting across two countries means applying for another U2 for the second.

Extensions — country by country, criteria attached

The 3-to-6-month stretch is not automatic: the employment service in the country where you became unemployed may extend the 3-month period up to 6 months, and per the Commission's warning, not all countries grant extensions. Those that do typically apply clear criteria — evidence of your job-search efforts among them. Ask your home employment service about its extension practice before you leave, not in month three — and remember benefit export settles money, not healthcare: the paperwork for cover while abroad is the S1/EHIC world of our coordination guide.

Common questions

What is the U2 form?

The authorisation (formerly E303) from your national employment services to export your unemployment benefit while you look for work in another EU country — valid for one destination country at a time, with a fresh U2 needed for each additional country.

How long can I receive my benefit abroad?

At least 3 months, extendable to a maximum of 6 depending on the paying institution — and not all countries grant extensions, so ask about the practice and criteria before departure.

Do I need to register in the new country too?

Exporting benefits comes with registration and job-seeking obligations in the destination — your home employment service's U2 briefing covers the exact steps and deadlines, and missing them can cost the benefit.

Does my health cover travel with the benefit?

Not automatically — the U2 moves money, not healthcare entitlement. The health paperwork for a stay abroad runs on the EHIC/S1 rules in our EU social-security coordination guide, and private cover bridges what those don't reach.
