Using a UK driving licence in France: two rules decide everything

Service-Public's F1460 states the general rule — a non-European licence is valid one year from normal residence — and then makes one exception in the same breath: "with the exception of a British licence issued before 2021." That carve-out is the legacy of the post-Brexit UK-France arrangement: Britons whose licences predate Brexit's licence cut-over are not squeezed by the one-year clock the way other third-country drivers are.

The practical split, then: licence issued before 2021 — you sit outside the standard one-year expiry rule, and the exchange question arises on the ordinary triggers instead (expiry, loss, offences, or a category change). Licence issued 2021 or later — you are in the general regime: one year of validity from residence, with the exchange window inside it.

The second fact is the one that makes the whole British case manageable: the United Kingdom appears on the interior ministry's reciprocity list (updated to 1 May 2026) — the same list that admits only 18 US states admits the UK as a country. Do it on the trigger, not before or after: French practice ties the exchange to a qualifying event, and an expired UK licence complicates a file that would have been routine a month earlier.
