Ambulance cost in Austria: transport and the hospital charge

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Austria's health portal states that transport in a medical emergency is carried out by the rescue service (Rettung) and needs no approval. For other transport, the social insurer pays the cost in full or in part when it is medically necessary and a doctor orders it on a transport slip. Once admitted, insured patients pay a daily contribution of roughly €12 to €16, depending on the state.

Emergencies: no approval needed

gesundheit.gv.at is direct on the emergency case: transport in medical emergencies is carried out by the Rettung and requires no approval. You do not need a transport slip before calling for help.

Planned transport: the doctor's slip decides

Outside emergencies the rules tighten. The portal states that transport costs to a hospital are covered in full or in part by the social insurer when there is a medical necessity, and that a doctor must order the transport and issue a transport slip (Transportschein), which also sets the type of transport, such as a taxi or a patient-transport ambulance.

  • The general condition for the insurer to pay is that the patient cannot use public transport, even with a companion, because of their physical or mental state.
  • A patient-transport ambulance is normally paid only when a doctor orders it and the patient travels lying down or in a carrying chair.
  • Contract taxis bill the insurer directly under the transport tariff, so the patient pays nothing for that trip.

Choosing a non-contracted hospital or doctor changes the sum: the insurer then reimburses at most what the trip to the nearest contracted facility would have cost.

Then the hospital's daily charge

The ambulance is not the only line on the bill. gesundheit.gv.at explains that insured patients in the general ward pay a daily contribution, the Spitalskostenbeitrag, which varies by federal state and lies between about €12 and €16 a day. The exact amount is on the hospital's website, and it is adjusted every year. A stay in the private class means paying the extra costs privately.

Where private cover fits

Our guide to Austria's emergency numbers covers 144 and the 1450 health advice line.

On Regency's international health plans, local ambulance to hospital is listed as full cover on all four tiers and on Essential Health. International evacuation and repatriation is an optional add-on rather than part of the base plan, and air, sea and mountain rescue is always excluded. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and what applies is whatever your policy wording says. We are an insurance introducer, not an insurer.
