What your insurance certificate must say for an Austrian permit
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The rule in writing
“Austrian residence permits require health insurance that provides benefits in Austria and covers all risks, with claims payable in Austria — a stricter standard than a Schengen travel policy.”

The three phrases the authority looks for
An Austrian residence permit application is checked against specific certificate wording, not just a policy summary. Three items matter: benefits provided in Austria, stated on the certificate; cover for all risks, including hospitalisation, without significant exclusions on core medical care; and claims payable in Austria, stated in writing. Add validity dates that cover your full permit period and a name that matches your passport exactly.
A standard Schengen travel policy is not enough; see our settlement permit insurance page for how a residence-permit certificate differs, and what it costs to arrange one.
Why wording beats brochures
"All risks" is not a fixed checklist; Austrian authorities assess it case by case. Two applicants with near-identical policies can get different outcomes depending on what their certificates actually state, not what the insurer's brochure promises. A certificate that omits the in-Austria benefit line, or is vague about hospitalisation, can stall an otherwise solid application.
This is also why permit type matters: the wording that satisfies a settlement permit isn't automatically right for another category. See how cover interacts with the Austrian healthcare system and read the all-risks rule, explained for the full picture.

Check my policyGetting your certificate checked before you apply
We arrange international cover valid in Austria with the certificate worded for the authority (partner arrangements confirmed July 2026); if your permit type doesn't fit our arrangement, we say so before you pay. Because assessment is case by case, a person reviews your permit type before we confirm the certificate wording; never an automated match.
Start with a policy check against our checklist, then request a quote once you know your permit type.
