How much is health insurance in Austria?

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Health insurance for Austria starts from $392 a year at Regency's 2026 EU rates, rising with age. But price is only half the answer; Austria's residence permits require cover that pays claims inside Austria under all-risks terms, stricter than a Schengen travel policy, and a person reviews your permit type before any plan is confirmed.

Visa-ready plans from $721 per adult, billed annually · see your exact price by age.

The rule in writing

“Austrian residence permits require health insurance that provides benefits in Austria and covers all risks, with claims payable in Austria — a stricter standard than a Schengen travel policy.”

What health insurance in Austria actually costs

From age 18, Regency's 2026 EU-region rates start at $392 a year for Essential, $721 for Major Medical, $1,133 for Standard, $1,525 for Comprehensive, and $1,906 for Fully Comprehensive. Every plan starts cover the same day, with no medical exam. That's the easy number. The harder part is the standard: Austria's residence permits don't accept a travel policy. They require cover that pays claims inside Austria, under all-risks terms; which is why the certificate wording matters as much as the price tag.

Real examples: prices at 40, 55, and 65

Age is the main driver of price here, not health; there's no medical exam, so nothing about your health history changes these numbers. Here's what the same five tiers cost at three common relocation ages, shown as the annual price with the real monthly-billing installment in brackets:

PlanAge 40Age 55Age 65
Essential$589/yr ($57/mo)$926/yr ($90/mo)$1,731/yr ($167/mo)
Major Medical$1,081/yr ($104/mo)$1,701/yr ($164/mo)$3,180/yr ($307/mo)
Standard$1,804/yr ($174/mo)$3,199/yr ($309/mo)$5,367/yr ($519/mo)
Comprehensive$2,475/yr ($239/mo)$4,334/yr ($419/mo)$6,917/yr ($669/mo)
Fully Comprehensive$3,094/yr ($299/mo)$5,418/yr ($524/mo)$8,646/yr ($836/mo)

Essential accepts new applicants up to age 80; the other four tiers cap entry at 70.

Family pricing: children are a flat rate

Children age 0 to 17 are priced flat; the same number applies at 2 or at 17, with none of the age curve you see in the adult table above:

PlanChild (0–17)
Essential$308/yr
Major Medical$566/yr
Standard$853/yr
Comprehensive$1,151/yr
Fully Comprehensive$1,439/yr

See what your whole household costs, priced by each person's age; a couple with two kids rarely fits a single per-person figure.

Annual vs monthly billing, and what happens next

Paying annually is the cheapest way to hold any of these five plans. The monthly figures above are real monthly-billing installments; not the annual total divided by twelve; so they already include that billing's own loading.

On the harder question, whether a plan actually satisfies your permit, we don't guess and we don't promise. We arrange international cover valid in Austria with the certificate worded for the authority (partner arrangements confirmed July 2026); if your permit type doesn't fit our arrangement, we say so before you pay. That's why a person reviews your permit type before any quote becomes a policy; whether you're moving on a Settlement Permit, a Red-White-Red Card, or something else.

Next: see your own numbers by age, check what Austria's settlement permit actually requires, read how Austria's healthcare system works day to day, or go straight to a quote.

Honest limits: Cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, including conditions you did not know about. We disclose this before you request a quote. Consulates keep discretion, and requirements can change. We show the published rule and its source; the final decision is the consulate’s.

Common questions

What's the cheapest health insurance for Austria?

Essential starts from $392 a year at age 18, Regency's lowest 2026 EU-region tier. It still has to match what your permit requires; a person reviews your permit type before any plan is confirmed, since the cheapest option doesn't automatically fit every visa category.

How much does health insurance cost by age in Austria?

Price rises with age across all five tiers, not with health; there's no medical exam. At 40, the five tiers run from $589 to $3,094 a year. At 55, they run from $926 to $5,418. At 65, they run from $1,731 to $8,646.

Why can't I just buy a cheap travel policy for Austria?

Austria's residence permits require cover with all-risks terms that pays claims inside Austria, which is stricter than a standard Schengen travel policy. A travel-only plan is usually turned away at the permit stage, regardless of what it cost.

How much is health insurance for children moving to Austria?

Children age 0 to 17 are priced flat regardless of age, from $308 a year on Essential up to $1,439 on Fully Comprehensive, with none of the age curve that applies to adults.
