Banned dog breeds in Austria: there is no national list

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

There is no Austrian banned-breed list, because dog law is not federal — each Bundesland writes its own. Vienna is the one most arrivals meet, and it names eleven Listenhunde plus their crosses. Keeping one there is legal and conditional: a Hundeführschein, and proof of liability cover with a sum insured of at least €725,000. Move to a different province and the list changes with you.

There is no Austrian list — dog law is provincial

The question assumes a national answer that does not exist. Animal-keeping law in Austria sits with the Länder, so the breeds treated as high-risk, and the duties that follow, are set province by province.

That matters more than it sounds. A dog needing a licence and a muzzle in Vienna may face a different regime in Lower Austria, which has its own Hundehaltegesetz. A move between provinces is a change of law, not just a change of address.

What follows is Vienna's regime, because it is where most new arrivals land. Check your own Land before you rely on any of it.

Vienna's list, verbatim

The City of Vienna names these as Listenhunde — and the leaflet is explicit that crosses count too, "und Mischlinge daraus":

  • Bullterrier
  • Staffordshire Bullterrier
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Mastino Napoletano
  • Mastín Español
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Mastiff and Bullmastiff
  • Tosa Inu
  • Pitbullterrier
  • Rottweiler
  • Dogo Argentino

Be careful with secondary summaries here. Several put Vienna's list at six breeds. The city's own document lists eleven, and the difference includes the mastiff group that an owner relocating with a Mastino or a Fila would very much want to know about.

What Vienna asks for: the licence and the policy

Keeping a Listenhund in Vienna requires a Hundeführschein — a dog licence obtained by passing a test — and registration brings a specific set of documents with it.

One of them is the insurance, and the figure is exact: "Nachweis einer gültigen Haftpflichtversicherung mit einer Versicherungssumme von mindestens 725.000 Euro" — proof of valid liability cover with a sum insured of at least €725,000, submitted as a copy of the policy.

Alongside it: photo identification, a Strafregisterbescheinigung no older than three months, and proof that the dog tax has been paid. Listed dogs must also be leashed and muzzled in public.

As everywhere on this page, that policy is animal liability cover. It is a separate market from the health insurance we introduce, and holding one says nothing about the other.

What we can and cannot help with

To be clear about scope: we do not arrange pet transport, import permits or animal liability cover. We are an insurance introducer for international health and life cover for people.

What we can do is the human side of the same move — health cover that meets the rule your route sets out, cited and dated on the country hub. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.

Tell us your destination, visa, and who’s moving. Our team reviews it against the current requirement and calls you with a quote — no obligation.

Cover underwritten by Regency Assurance · every rule on this site cited and dated · a person calls back within one business day.

Before you request a quote: cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States, and pre-existing conditions are not covered — including conditions you did not know about. We say this up front so a quote is worth your time.

Common questions

Are any dog breeds banned in Austria?

No breed is banned nationally, and there is no national list at all. Dog law sits with the nine Bundesländer, so the breeds treated as high-risk and the duties attached differ by province.

Which dogs are Listenhunde in Vienna?

Vienna names eleven, plus crosses: Bullterrier, Staffordshire Bullterrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Mastino Napoletano, Mastín Español, Fila Brasileiro, Mastiff and Bullmastiff, Tosa Inu, Pitbullterrier, Rottweiler and Dogo Argentino.

How much liability cover does Vienna require?

A sum insured of at least €725,000. Proof of a valid Haftpflichtversicherung at that level, as a copy of the policy, is one of the documents required when registering a Listenhund.

What is the Hundeführschein?

A dog licence obtained by passing a test. It is mandatory for keepers of Listenhunde in Vienna, and registration also calls for photo identification, a criminal-record certificate no older than three months, and proof the dog tax has been paid.

Do the rules change if I move within Austria?

Yes. Each Bundesland writes its own dog law, so a move between provinces can change which breeds are listed and what is required. Lower Austria, for example, has its own Hundehaltegesetz. Check the rules for the province you are moving to.
