Brussels transport passes: STIB, Brupass and what they cost
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The passes and what they cost
Brussels public transport fares are set by the Brussels-Capital Region government. Its fares decree, published in the Moniteur belge on 10 December 2025, applies from 1 February 2026. The main passes:
- STIB 1 month — €56; STIB 12 months — €560
- Brupass 1 month — €68; Brupass 12 months — €680 — a combined pass that also covers other operators' services
- Brupass XL 1 month — €94; 12 months €940 — the extended combined pass
- STIB Airport Line 1 month — €68
The STIB pass covers metro, tram and bus on the STIB network; Brupass is the one to choose if your daily journey also uses another operator's services — STIB staff can confirm which pass fits your route.

The cheap passes most people miss
The decree sets several heavily reduced annual passes:
- STIB 18–24, Brussels resident — €12 for 12 months
- STIB school pass — €12 for 12 months, and free from the third purchase in a family
- STIB BIM (for people entitled to the increased reimbursement rate) — €9.20 a month
- children under 6 travel free, without a ticket
For a family moving to Brussels with teenagers or young adults, those rates change the transport budget entirely: a year of travel for a 20-year-old resident costs less than a single month at the full price.
Passes are loaded onto a MOBIB card, which costs €6.

Check my policySingle tickets and tapping a bank card
For occasional travel, the 2026 single fares:
- STIB 1 journey — €2.40, plus €0.50 if loaded onto a paper ticket
- STIB 1 day — €9.00
- Brupass 10 journeys — €18.90
The easiest option for a newcomer is simply to tap a contactless bank card. The decree sets a daily maximum of €8.50 when you pay by EMV bank card, so a busy day of travel never costs more than that.
At €2.40 a journey, the €56 monthly pass pays for itself at around 24 journeys a month — roughly one return trip on most working days.
