The Deutschland-Ticket: Germany flattened into one fare
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The deal, from the operator
Deutsche Bahn's page states it in one breath: the Deutschland-Ticket costs €63 per month and is valid Germany-wide on bus, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and regional rail; it is cancellable monthly and available only as a subscription (Stand: August 2026). The subscription-only rule surprises visitors — there is no walk-up paper month — but the monthly cancellation right keeps it flexible for residents; students and some cities layer discounted variants on top.
The exclusion that matters: long-distance trains (ICE/IC/EC) are not included — the ticket flattens local and regional Germany, not the intercity network.

What it means for a newcomer's budget
Before this ticket, German transport budgeting meant deciphering each Verbund's zone map; now a newcomer's line item is €63 flat, valid from Munich U-Bahn to a Frisian bus. Against the German wage level and our price-level pages, it is one of Europe's best mobility deals — Madrid's zoned abono and Lisbon's navegante make the comparison interesting rather than one-sided.
Subscription mechanics ride on German rails in the administrative sense too: an account, usually a SEPA mandate — one more small reason the arrival paperwork comes first.

The €63 line is the easy one; Germany's health-insurance equivalence rules for residence permits are the file with teeth, documented on the Germany hub from the sources. One subscription for the trains, one certificate for the permit:
