Taking Spain's driving test in English: the official picture

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Spain's theory exam is a DGT exam, and the DGT's own free practice service works by selecting the exam type and the language you want to take it in — no registration, no documents, unlimited free test batteries drawn from real exam questions. The DGT's accessibility programme (easy-read adaptations, audio in Spanish first with extension 'to all languages' planned) confirms the multi-language frame. Confirm English availability for your specific test slot when booking; the practical exam runs with an examiner in the car.

The theory exam and its languages

The DGT's exam page describes its free practice service in terms that carry the language answer: simply select the type of theory exam to take and the language in which you want to take it — open to anyone, free, no registration, with test batteries in the same format as a real exam drawn from real questions, updated regularly. The DGT is the competent body for all licences, and the practice service is the official rehearsal room — in your exam language.

The accessibility programme — and its language note

The DGT's 2024 accessibility note adds the frame: the common test can now be taken with texts and images adapted to simple language under the UNE 153101 easy-read standard, and audio support started in tests taken in Castilian, with extension to all languages planned — the phrase that confirms exams run in multiple languages, with adaptations combinable. What the official pages don't publish is a fixed language list per test centre, which is why the booking step is where you confirm English for your slot.

The rest of the file: practical exam, schools, exchanges

The practical exam has no language menu — an examiner rides along, and driving schools advertising English-speaking instruction are the practical bridge (the DGT page covers choosing a school and exam presentation). Before any of it, check whether you need the test at all: EU licences are recognised, convenio-country licences exchange without tests for car classes — the test route is mainly for licences Spain doesn't exchange, the US among them.

Common questions

Can I take the Spanish driving theory test in English?

The DGT's exam ecosystem is multi-language — its official practice service has you select exam type and language, and its accessibility notes reference all exam languages. Confirm English for your specific test centre and slot when booking.

Where can I practise the theory test officially?

The DGT's free online test service — no registration, real exam questions, same format as the real thing, in your selected language.

Is the practical test available in English?

The driving test itself has no language setting — an examiner accompanies the drive. English-speaking driving schools are the standard bridge for instructions and preparation.

Do I even need the Spanish test?

Only if your licence can't be exchanged: EU/EEA licences are recognised, convenio countries exchange test-free for car classes — US licence holders are the classic test-route case.
