Where these numbers come from

PriceCatcher is the price-surveillance dataset published on OpenDOSM, Malaysia's official open-data portal. Ground staff record shelf prices at hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and markets across every state. The September 2026 file holds 1,742,320 price records.

For each item below we took the median of every price recorded for it that month, which shows the typical shelf price without being skewed by one unusually cheap or expensive shop. The figures are our calculation from the official records, not a figure DOSM publishes itself.

Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor

The same records split by state show a modest premium in Kuala Lumpur on fresh items:

  • Chicken (1 kg): KL RM9.69, Penang RM9.29, Johor RM8.99
  • Kembung fish (1 kg): KL RM19.99, Penang RM16.00, Johor RM18.99

Packaged staples such as branded cooking oil barely move between states, so the city difference is mostly in fish and vegetables.
