Moving to the Netherlands from the UK: what actually works after Brexit

The rule in writing
“Anyone insured by operation of law under the Wlz — in practice residents of the Netherlands, and non-residents taxed on employment performed there — must take out a Dutch zorgverzekering. Residence or Dutch-taxed work is the trigger, not nationality and not the residence permit. A non-working spouse who becomes resident is caught with no Dutch income at all.”

The rule in writing
“The well-known "four months" is a retroactivity window, not a grace period. The obligation bites the day it arises; a policy taken out within four months back-dates to that day, so no gap exists and the intervening premiums are still owed.”

The rule in writing
“Dutch insurers must accept every insurance-liable applicant for the basic policy, at the same premium, regardless of age or health. Any claim that a private plan offers easier acceptance than the Dutch basic package is false.”

The route Britons do not have — and the ones they do
Start with the correction that saves the most wasted planning: there is no UK equivalent of the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. DAFT — the route that lets a US national set up in business with €4,500 of capital and no points test — covers US and Japanese nationals only. A self-employed Briton goes through the standard route: the RVO points assessment (30 points in each of three categories, or 45 combined), a business plan, and a case that the venture serves an essential Dutch interest. That is a materially harder file, and any blog implying Britons have a DAFT-like option is wrong.
The routes that genuinely work: employment as a highly skilled migrant — the salary criterion is €5,942 gross a month at 30 and over (€4,357 under 30, figures valid to 31 December 2026 and reset twice a year), through an employer that is an IND-recognised sponsor; the EU Blue Card on similar money; study; the orientation year for recent graduates of top-200 universities — UK degrees frequently qualify; and family reunification with a partner in the Netherlands.
There is also no retirement route to fall back on — a verified absence, covered honestly on its own page.

The two clocks Brexit started
The 90/180 rule now applies to you. UK citizens visit the Schengen area visa-free for at most 90 days in any rolling 180 — counted across all 29 Schengen countries together, recomputed for every day of your stay. House-hunting trips, visits to a partner, remote-work stints: they all draw the same budget, and the count does not reset at the calendar year. The 90/180 explainer covers the mechanics and the EU's own calculator.
The insurance clock starts at residence. Once you live in the Netherlands or are taxed on Dutch work, a Dutch basic policy is compulsory — your GHIC does not discharge it, no UK policy does, and no international policy does either. The four months people cite is a retroactivity window, not a grace period: a policy bought inside it back-dates with the premiums owed, and missing it leaves a real uninsured gap with CAK enforcement behind it (€529.74 fine in 2026).
One piece of genuinely good news for older movers: Dutch insurers must accept every applicant for the basic policy at the same premium regardless of age or health — the acceptatieplicht. There is no underwriting cliff waiting for you.

60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyThe practical sequence, UK edition
The chain runs the same as for any third-country national, and each link gates the next: register with your municipality within five days of arriving (BRP), receive your BSN automatically, open the bank account, buy the basic policy inside the four-month window, register with a huisarts before you need one.
Three UK-specific notes. Your NHS relationship ends at residence — the huisarts gatekeeper system replaces it, and it works differently: no self-referral to specialists, with the GP holding an explicit right to refuse a referral. Bring your medication paperwork: anything under the Dutch Opium Act — including common UK prescriptions for ADHD and strong painkillers — needs a certificate, covered on the medication page. And for the stretch while your IND decision is pending, Dutch cover cannot be bought at all — that window is insurable only privately, and it is the honest place international cover fits a British move.
