The prime d'activité: who France tops up, branch by branch

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

The prime d'activité supplements modest professional income, applied for through the CAF's (or MSA's) online service. The fiche's branches: French nationals need to be 18+, professionally active with modest income, and residing in France stably and effectively. EU nationals add a right of residence and 3 months' presence at application. Non-EU nationals need, on top of age and activity, a qualifying status — most commonly a work-authorising residence title held for at least 5 years. Temporarily posted workers are excluded outright.

The base conditions

Fiche F2882's core: you can benefit, under conditions, from the prime d'activité, which completes your professional income; the request runs through the CAF's téléservice (or the MSA for the agricultural regime). The universal trio — 18 or older, professional activity with modest income, stable and effective residence in France — comes with a warning printed in the fiche itself: temporarily posted workers in France have no right to the prime d'activité.

The nationality branches

The fiche splits three ways. EU/EEA nationals: the trio plus a right of residence in France and living there for at least 3 months at the time of application. Non-EU nationals: the age-and-activity conditions plus one of the listed statuses — led by holding, for at least 5 years, a residence title permitting work in France, with alternatives including single parents with a child under 3 holding a title, and carte-de-résident holders. The 5-year line is the one that surprises recent arrivals: this benefit rewards settled work, not first-year work.

Where it sits in the French benefits stack

The prime d'activité is the working-poor complement in a stack that includes allocations familiales (families of 2+ children) and housing aid — each with its own residence-regularity gates, all administered by the CAF. The practical loop for eligible movers: the CAF simulator answers the how-much question against your declared income each quarter, and the answer moves as your income does. Amounts are barème-driven and updated — we quote none we haven't verified.

Common questions

Can foreigners get the prime d'activité?

EU nationals: yes, with a residence right and 3 months' presence. Non-EU nationals: yes with a qualifying status — most commonly a work-authorising residence title held at least 5 years, or the listed alternatives. Posted workers are excluded.

How much is the prime d'activité?

Barème-driven against your household's income, recalculated quarterly on your declarations — the CAF simulator is the only honest number for your case.

I arrived last year on a work visa — do I qualify?

Generally not yet on the standard non-EU branch, which asks for 5 years holding a work-permitting title; check the fiche's alternative statuses for exceptions that may fit.

Is the prime the same as RSA?

No — the RSA is the minimum-income benefit; the prime d'activité specifically tops up income from work. Different conditions, same CAF machinery.
