Public holidays in Ireland in 2027

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Ireland has 10 public holidays a year, including the February holiday for St Brigid's Day — in 2027, Monday 1 February. Good Friday is not a public holiday. For each one, your employer decides whether you get a paid day off, a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day's pay.

The 10 public holidays, with 2027 dates

According to the Workplace Relations Commission, Ireland's public holidays are set by rule. Applying those rules to the 2027 calendar:

  • New Year's Day — Friday 1 January
  • First Monday in February — Monday 1 February
  • St Patrick's Day — Wednesday 17 March
  • Easter Monday — 29 March
  • First Monday in May — 3 May
  • First Monday in June — 7 June
  • First Monday in August — 2 August
  • Last Monday in October — 25 October
  • Christmas Day — Saturday 25 December
  • St Stephen's Day — Sunday 26 December

The February holiday falls on the first Monday, except when 1 February is a Friday — in 2027, 1 February is itself a Monday.

What you're entitled to

For each public holiday, the WRC says the employee is entitled to whichever of these the employer decides:

  • a paid day off on the day
  • a paid day off within a month
  • an extra day of annual leave
  • an extra day's pay

Full-time workers qualify immediately; part-time workers qualify once they've worked a total of 40 hours in the previous 5 weeks. If you work on a public holiday, you're paid for the day and also keep your entitlement for the holiday.

Planning your Irish year

One thing to know as a newcomer: Good Friday is a normal working day in Ireland, even though Easter Monday is a holiday. In 2027, most of the Monday holidays create long weekends — February, Easter, May, June, August and October — and St Patrick's Day falls midweek, on a Wednesday.

Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day land on the weekend in 2027; how that's handled depends on the entitlement your employer chooses from the list above.
