Retirement age in Portugal: a number the government resets every year
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
2026: sixty-six and nine months, by decree
The mechanism is the story: under Decreto-Lei 187/2007's formula, the normal access age moves with average life expectancy at 65, and a portaria fixes each year's number in advance. Portaria n.º 358/2024/1 of 30 December states it directly: a idade normal de acesso à pensão em 2026 é 66 anos e 9 meses — two months above 2025's 66 years and 7 months.

The four-month discount for long careers
The Segurança Social's official pension guide adds the personal layer: the normal access age is reduced by four months for each year beyond 40 in the contributory career — producing an "idade pessoal de reforma" that falls as your record grows, with no penalty from that personal age onward. The guide also covers the early routes (with their penalties) and the special regimes; this page keeps to the descriptive frame.

Two practical notes. First, the annual-portaria mechanism means any article stating one fixed "Portuguese retirement age" is stale by design — the number belongs to a year, and the portaria is the receipt. Second, for mixed careers, EU-insured years aggregate toward Portuguese qualifying periods under the coordination rules in our multi-country pension guide. The D7-retiree healthcare file — the part we arrange — is its own guide.
