Retirement age in Spain: two ages, decided by your contribution record

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Spain runs a two-track retirement age. Per the Seguridad Social's own table, in 2026 you retire at 65 if you can show at least 38 years and 3 months of contributions — otherwise at 66 years and 10 months. From 2027 the transition completes: 65 with 38 years 6 months, 67 without. The system has been climbing gradually since 2013, so your year and your contribution record together decide your date.

The general rule since 2013

The Seguridad Social's pension page states the frame: from 1 January 2013, access age depends on your age and the contributions accumulated across your working life, requiring you to have reached 67 years, or 65 years when 38 years and 6 months of contributions are accredited — applied gradually through a published transition table.

The table years that matter now

From the official gradual-application table:

  • 2025 — 65 with 38 years 3 months or more of contributions; otherwise 66 years 8 months.
  • 2026 — 65 with 38 years 3 months or more; otherwise 66 years 10 months.
  • From 2027 — 65 with 38 years 6 months or more; otherwise 67.

The table is the whole story for movers arriving mid-career: the question is never just "how old", it's "how many contributed years can you prove" — and for years worked elsewhere in the EU, the aggregation rules in our multi-country pension guide decide what counts.

What this page is not

This is the ordinary-age table, descriptively. Early-retirement routes with reducing coefficients, special regimes, and partial retirement all exist with their own rules on the same official pages — and whether retiring to Spain makes financial sense involves tax and pension questions this page deliberately doesn't touch. What we do cover: the EU pension aggregation mechanics, and the healthcare file every retiree's visa needs — mapped in our retiree guides, with the exact arrangement confirmed on your quote call before you rely on it.

Common questions

What is the retirement age in Spain in 2026?

65 if you can accredit at least 38 years and 3 months of contributions; 66 years and 10 months if you can't — per the Seguridad Social's gradual table. In 2027 the split becomes 65 (with 38y6m) versus 67.

Do my years worked in other EU countries count?

For meeting qualifying periods, EU coordination aggregates your insured periods across member states — each country then pays its own share. Our multi-country state-pension guide covers the mechanics.

Can I retire earlier than the table age?

Spain has early-retirement routes with reducing coefficients and minimum-age floors, plus special regimes — all with their own conditions on the Seguridad Social's pages. This page covers the ordinary age only.

Does retiring to Spain at 60 work on a non-lucrative visa?

The NLV doesn't require Spanish pension age — it requires passive income and health insurance. Spain's retirement age governs when a Spanish state pension starts, not when you can move.
