The revisione: Italy's inspection clock under the Codice della Strada

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Italy's periodic vehicle inspection — the revisione — sits in Article 80 of the Codice della Strada (D.Lgs 285/1992): for cars and vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, the revisione must be arranged within four years from the date of first registration and every two years thereafter (entro quattro anni dalla data di prima immatricolazione e successivamente ogni due anni). Vehicles carrying more than nine people, taxis and hire-with-driver (NCC) cars inspect annually under the same article.

What Article 80 sets

Article 80 makes the Ministry of Transport the keeper of the system — decrees set i criteri, i tempi e le modalità for general or partial revisions to verify safety, silence and emissions conditions. The core private-car rule sits in comma 3: la revisione deve essere disposta entro quattro anni dalla data di prima immatricolazione e successivamente ogni due anni, in line with EU directive timetables. Comma 4 puts 9+ seaters, taxis, ambulances and NCC vehicles on an annual cycle.

Where and how it happens

The revisione runs through the Motorizzazione Civile or authorised private centres (officine autorizzate), with the result recorded against the vehicle — the booking, the test and the outcome all attach to the plate, not the owner. Article 80 also arms the system's teeth: circulation with an overdue revisione is sanctionable, repeat falsification cases cost an authorised centre its concession, and roadside checks read the vehicle's status directly.

The Italian car stack for arrivals

A mover's Italian car life starts with the codice fiscale, runs through registration, and then keeps the revisione rhythm — four years of peace on a new car, then the biennial drumbeat. The EU matrix around it: Spain's ITV shares the 4-then-2 shape, Germany's HU starts at three years, France's CT at four, and Portugal's IPO tightens to annual after year eight.

Common questions

How often is the revisione for a normal car?

Within four years from first registration, then every two years — article 80, comma 3 of the Codice della Strada.

Which vehicles inspect every year?

Per comma 4: vehicles with more than nine seats including the driver, taxis, ambulances, hire-with-driver (NCC) cars and atypical vehicles.

Where do I get it done?

At the Motorizzazione Civile or an authorised private centre — the result attaches to the vehicle's record either way.

What if the revisione is overdue?

Driving with an expired revisione is sanctionable under article 80 and visible at roadside checks — book the test rather than risk the fine.
