SPID: the credential Italian bureaucracy assumes you have

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

SPID — the Public Digital Identity System — is, per spid.gov.it, the simple, fast and secure access key to the digital services of local and central administrations: a pair of credentials (username and password) representing each citizen's digital identity, recognised across the Public Administration. It also opens public services of other EU member states. You obtain it from one of the accredited identity providers listed on the official site, after identity verification.

What SPID is, per the official site

The official definition: Public Digital Identity System (SPID) is the simple, fast and secure access key to digital services of local and central administrations. A pair of credentials (username and password) that represents the digital and personal identity of each citizen, recognised by the Public Administration for personalised, secure service access. The same page carries the cross-border promise: SPID also allows access to public services of the member states of the European Union that accept it.

Getting one: providers, not a ministry counter

SPID's structure is federated: you choose among the accredited identity providers — the official site's "how to choose between digital identity providers" section lists them with their verification methods (in-person, webcam, CIE/CNS-based) and any fees. The universal prerequisites are an identity document and an Italian codice fiscale — which is why the codice is step zero of every Italian move. Verification method availability for non-residents varies by provider; the official list is the place to compare.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Italy has pushed administration online behind SPID/CIE logins: tax portals, INPS, health-system services, comune counters. A newcomer without SPID ends up queueing for things residents do from a sofa — so the credential belongs in the first-month checklist beside the tessera sanitaria. And like Spain's Cl@ve, SPID is a national ancestor of the EUDI wallet: the login layer is converging EU-wide, but until 2027-28 the national keys are the ones that open doors.

Common questions

Can foreigners get SPID?

Yes — the prerequisites are an identity document and an Italian codice fiscale, with identity verification through your chosen accredited provider. Method availability (webcam vs in-person) varies by provider; compare on the official list.

Is SPID free?

The system is public; providers set their own terms — several offer free verification routes while premium methods can carry fees. The official provider comparison is the honest price list.

What do I need SPID for?

Practically everything digital in Italian administration — tax, INPS, health services, comune procedures — plus EU services that accept it cross-border.

SPID or CIE?

The electronic identity card (CIE) is the other national login. SPID's provider model makes it the more accessible route for newcomers without Italian cards — many residents end up using both.
