Travel insurance for Malaysia: the advisory that can void it
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The one area that changes everything
Most of Malaysia carries no FCDO travel warning. One stretch does, and it is not an obscure corner.
The FCDO "advises against all but essential travel to all islands and dive sites off the coast of eastern Sabah from Sandakan to Tawau, including Lankayan Island, due to the threat of kidnapping".
Read that as a diver would. Sandakan to Tawau is the Sulu Sea coast, and the islands off it are exactly what draws people to eastern Sabah in the first place. The advisory covers the attraction, not the detour.

What travelling against advice does to a policy
The FCDO puts it in one sentence: "Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office."
That is not a warning about the claim being reduced. Invalidated means the policy may not respond at all — including for something unrelated to the reason for the advisory. A diving injury in an area flagged for kidnapping risk is still a claim made in an area you were advised not to enter.
Insurers differ on how they apply this and some offer endorsements, so the practical step is to ask before you book rather than after you are in the water.

60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyWhat the FCDO tells you to arrange
Beyond the advisory, the health guidance is specific about what cover has to reach.
Check that "your destination can provide the healthcare you may need" and that you have "appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation" — flagged as particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant. And separately: "make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation".
Accessible funds is the phrase people skim. Malaysian private hospitals frequently expect payment or a guarantee at admission, so the question is not only whether you are covered but whether the insurer settles directly or you front the money.
Travelling versus living there
The distinction matters more than it sounds. Travel insurance is priced for a trip with a return date; it is not designed to be your healthcare arrangement once Malaysia is where you live.
If you are moving — on MM2H, an employment pass or a student pass — the product changes, and so does what the routes themselves require. We have set those out separately rather than blur them together here.
What we can and cannot help with
To be clear about scope: we do not sell single-trip travel insurance. We are an insurance introducer for international health and life cover — the kind you hold as a resident, not as a tourist.
If you are moving rather than visiting, that is the conversation we can help with. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.
