BVG tickets in Berlin, explained

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Berlin's public transport, run by BVG, uses three fare zones: A (inside the S-Bahn ring), B (out to the city boundary) and C (the surrounding area, including Potsdam). A single ticket is valid for 2 hours, with standard fares from €4.00; a 24-hour ticket starts at €11.20. Residents often choose a monthly ticket or the Deutschlandticket.

The fare zones

According to BVG, Berlin is divided into three tariff zones:

  • Zone A — the inner city, up to and including the S-Bahn ring
  • Zone B — outside the ring, up to the city boundary
  • Zone C — the Greater Berlin area, roughly 15 km around the city, including Potsdam

Where you start and end decides which zones you need — most trips within the city are covered by an AB ticket.
