DigiD: the login the Netherlands assumes you have
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
What DigiD opens
The official definition: your DigiD allows you to identify yourself when making arrangements on the internet, such as with the government, educational institutes, healthcare institutions or your pension fund — one login, personal-data protection built in, with multiple login methods (app first among them). In practice it's the key to the tax authority, toeslagen, healthcare portals and municipal services — the Dutch sibling of Spain's Cl@ve and Italy's SPID.

Apply, then the letter, then activation
Per the official apply-and-activate pages: request DigiD via the DigiD app or the application form on the website, then activate your DigiD with the activation code you received by letter — the postal step is why your registered address matters. The prerequisite underneath is the BSN, which arrives with BRP registration — the arrival chain runs BRP → BSN → DigiD, in that order.

The official page says it directly: even if you live on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, Saba or abroad, you can apply for and activate a DigiD — and for leavers, are you moving from the European Netherlands across the border? Then apply for a DigiD before you move. That sentence saves months: pensioners abroad, ex-residents with Dutch tax threads, and cross-border commuters all need DigiD, and getting it while still registered in the Netherlands is the easy path. DigiD Authorisation — letting someone act for you — is the companion tool the same pages cover.
