Malaysia's ETS train: the intercity way to travel the West Coast

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

The ETS (Electric Train Service), run by KTMB, is Malaysia's fastest metre-gauge intercity train, reaching 140 km/h on the west coast. It runs Platinum, Gold and Silver services, linking KL Sentral with Ipoh, Butterworth for Penang and Padang Besar — and KTMB's April 2026 timetable runs services from JB Sentral in the south.

What the ETS is

KTMB describes the ETS as "Malaysia's fastest metre gauge intercity train", reaching up to 140 km/h along Peninsular Malaysia's west coast.

There are three types of service:

  • ETS Platinum — fewer stops, the quickest
  • ETS Gold — stops at selected stations
  • ETS Silver — stops at every station along the way

Concessions and discounts are available on all three, according to KTMB.
