Living in Surabaya: what healthcare looks like
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
What the consular list names in Surabaya
The US Mission in Indonesia maintains a medical assistance list with a dedicated Surabaya section. Among the facilities it names:
- Catholic St. Vincentius A. Paulo (RKZ) Hospital — Jl. Diponegoro 51, Surabaya
- PHC Hospital — Jl. Prapat Kurung Selatan 1, Tanjung Perak
- Surabaya Orthopedic and Traumatology Hospital
There is also a US Consulate in Surabaya itself, which is the office behind that section of the list — a practical difference from most Indonesian cities.

A working city, and what that changes
Bali's private clinics are built around foreign patients who pay at the desk and claim later, or whose insurer they already know. Surabaya's hospitals are built around Indonesian patients.
They are not worse for it — RKZ is a long-established hospital and the city has real specialist capacity, including dedicated orthopaedic and trauma provision, which a port and industrial city needs. But the administrative assumptions differ, and an admissions desk that rarely sees your insurer is a slower conversation than one that sees it daily.
The practical consequence: confirm in advance which Surabaya facilities your insurer settles with directly, rather than assuming a recognisable international policy will be recognised.
60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyWhat the FCDO says about the wider standard
Nationally, the Foreign Office is blunt: "the standard of local medical care can be poor and some medical tests cannot be performed reliably". That is a statement about Indonesia rather than about Surabaya specifically, and a major city is not a remote island — but it sets the expectation for anything complex.
For serious cases the pathway is referral, and from East Java that generally means Singapore rather than somewhere closer. Evacuation cover is therefore the line on the policy that matters most, as it is almost everywhere in Indonesia.
What we can and cannot help with
To be clear about scope: we do not recommend individual hospitals, and nothing here is medical advice. We are an insurance introducer for international health and life cover for people.
What we can do is the cover behind the visit — in particular whether your insurer settles directly with the facility you end up at. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.
