Mail forwarding in France: how the réexpédition actually works

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

La Poste's réexpédition définitive transfers your mail after a permanent move: the national contract (France and Outre-mer, Colissimo parcels included) starts at €55.00 for 6 months (renewable once) or 12 months; the international contract forwards letters up to 2kg abroad from €134.00. Subscription runs online in three steps — choose the offer, pass La Poste's identity verification (online, by post or in a bureau), and forwarding starts on your chosen date.

The two contracts

From La Poste's own product page: moving within France, the réexpédition nationale définitive — à partir de 55,00 € — transfers letters and Colissimo parcels to the new address in France or Outre-mer, for 6 months (renewable once) or 12 months. Moving abroad, the réexpédition internationale définitive — à partir de 134,00 € — forwards courrier up to 2kg to the foreign address. The page's own framing states the split: new address abroad → international contract; new address in France → national contract.

Subscribing: three steps, one identity check

The product page lays out the flow: 1. choose the offer and subscribe online in a few clicks; 2. La Poste vérifie mon identité en ligne, par courrier ou en Bureau de Poste — the contract is secured only after identity verification; 3. forwarding begins from your chosen date. The identity step is the one movers trip on from abroad — do it before leaving France if you can, at a counter if online verification balks.

What forwarding buys a mover — and its limits

Twelve months of forwarding is the safety net under every French administrative thread you might have missed — payslips, tax notices, bank cards, the carte Vitale arriving late. Its limits: it's a paid bridge, not a change of address — each administration still needs the new address (service-public's change-of-address service batches much of that), and the international contract covers letters, not parcels. The equivalent Spanish service was unreachable on official channels when we checked — for Spain, handle critical mail before the move.

Common questions

How much does La Poste mail forwarding cost?

Per La Poste's page: national definitive forwarding from €55.00 (6 months renewable once, or 12 months), international definitive from €134.00 for letters up to 2kg. Exact tiers live on the offer pages.

Can I set up réexpédition from abroad?

The subscription is online, but the contract activates only after La Poste's identity verification — online, by post or in a bureau. Sorting it before departure is the smooth path.

Are parcels forwarded too?

On the national contract, Colissimo parcels transfer to the new French address; the international contract covers courrier up to 2kg, not parcels.

Does forwarding replace changing my address everywhere?

No — it's a time-limited bridge while you update each administration and service. Treat the 6-12 months as your deadline for the address-change sweep.
