Public holidays in Portugal: thirteen days, straight from Article 234

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Portugal writes its public holidays directly into law. Article 234 of the Código do Trabalho lists thirteen obligatory holidays: 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 25 April, 1 May, Corpus Christi, 10 June, 15 August, 5 October, 1 November, and 1, 8 and 25 December. Good Friday may be observed on another locally meaningful day in the Easter period, and specific legislation can move certain holidays to the following Monday.

The thirteen obligatory holidays

Article 234(1) of the Código do Trabalho names the days:

  • 1 January — Ano Novo
  • Sexta-Feira Santa — Good Friday (movable)
  • Domingo de Páscoa — Easter Sunday (movable)
  • 25 April — Dia da Liberdade
  • 1 May — Dia do Trabalhador
  • Corpo de Deus — Corpus Christi (movable)
  • 10 June — Dia de Portugal
  • 15 August — Assunção
  • 5 October — Implantação da República
  • 1 November — Todos os Santos
  • 1 December — Restauração da Independência
  • 8 December — Imaculada Conceição
  • 25 December — Natal

Ten fixed dates, three movable feasts tied to Easter — thirteen in all, and unlike Spain's regional grid, one national list.

The two flexibility clauses

Article 234 carries two adjustment mechanisms of its own:

  • The Good Friday holiday may be observed on another day with local significance within the Easter period (art. 234(2)).
  • By specific legislation, certain obligatory holidays may be observed on the Monday of the following week (art. 234(3)).

The article as it stands took its current shape with the 2016 amendment (Lei 8/2016) — the one that restored four holidays that had been suspended earlier in the decade, which is why older articles still describe a ten-holiday Portugal.

What sits outside Article 234

The Labour Code list is the national, obligatory layer — the days when closing rules and holiday-work rules bite. Municipal holidays and Carnival arrangements are governed separately, so the day your city celebrates its padroeiro is real but comes from a different rulebook. For anything that turns on a specific workplace — pay for working a holiday, make-up days — the Código do Trabalho around Article 234 (and your employment contract) is the text to read; that goes beyond this page's scope.

Common questions

Does Portugal have regional public holidays like Spain?

Not in the same way. Article 234's thirteen apply nationally; the local layer is the municipal holiday, set under separate rules — one day, tied to your concelho.

Why do some older articles say Portugal has 10 holidays?

Four holidays were suspended in the austerity years and restored by Lei 8/2016, which amended Article 234 into its current thirteen-day form. Anything written between 2012 and 2016 describes the reduced list.

Which of the thirteen move each year?

Three: Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Corpus Christi, all keyed to the date of Easter. The other ten are fixed calendar dates.

Do SEF/AIMA and finanças offices close on these days?

Public services close on obligatory holidays — and on their municipality's own holiday. Book residence and NIF appointments around both layers.
