Travel insurance for Indonesia: evacuation is the real exposure

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

The Foreign Office does not soften it: "the standard of local medical care can be poor and some medical tests cannot be performed reliably". That single sentence reframes what Indonesian travel cover is for. The exposure is not a clinic bill — it is evacuation, which for complex cases means leaving the country, and which the FCDO separately puts in the tens of thousands of pounds.

What the FCDO actually says about the care

Travel advice is usually hedged. On Indonesian healthcare it is not.

"The standard of local medical care can be poor and some medical tests cannot be performed reliably." That second clause is the one worth sitting with — it is not only about treatment, but about diagnosis. A test you cannot rely on is a decision you cannot make.

The guidance also asks you to check before travelling that "your destination can provide the healthcare you may need" and that you have "appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation", noting this matters particularly if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Evacuation, and why the destination depends on where you are

Indonesia is 17,000 islands, and cover has to reckon with that rather than with a single national standard.

From Bali, complex trauma, cardiac and neurosurgical cases are referred offshore, and the realistic destination is Singapore. From the far east of the country the picture is different: for Papua, the FCDO notes "limited hospital facilities in the region" and says that if you need emergency treatment "you are likely to be medically evacuated to Darwin in Australia".

So "medical evacuation cover" is not one number. An air ambulance from Papua to Darwin and a medical escort from Denpasar to Singapore are different operations at different costs, and a policy limit that is comfortable for one may not be for the other.

The things that actually generate the claims

The headline risks people insure against are rarely the ones that bite.

In Bali specifically, scooter accidents, animal bites with rabies exposure, dengue and diving incidents make up the everyday caseload. Several of those carry policy conditions that are easy to breach without realising — riding without the correct licence being the clearest example, and one that lets an insurer decline outright.

We have written those up individually rather than compress them here, because each has its own trap.

What we can and cannot help with

To be clear about scope: we do not sell single-trip travel insurance. We are an insurance introducer for international health and life cover — the kind you hold as a resident, not as a tourist.

If you are moving rather than visiting, that is the conversation we can help with. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.

Common questions

Do I need travel insurance for Indonesia?

The FCDO advises arranging appropriate travel insurance covering local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation, and separately adequate cover plus accessible funds for medical treatment and repatriation. Given what it says about local care standards, evacuation cover is the part to check.

What does the FCDO say about healthcare in Indonesia?

That the standard of local medical care can be poor and that some medical tests cannot be performed reliably. It asks travellers to check that their destination can provide the healthcare they may need before going.

Where would I be evacuated to from Indonesia?

It depends where you are. Complex cases from Bali are typically referred to Singapore. For Papua the FCDO notes limited hospital facilities and says you are likely to be medically evacuated to Darwin in Australia.

How much does medical evacuation from Indonesia cost?

The Foreign Office puts medical evacuation in the tens of thousands of pounds. It is the single largest exposure on most Indonesian trips, which is why the evacuation limit matters more than the outpatient one.

Is travel insurance enough if I am moving to Indonesia?

No. Travel insurance is built for a trip with a return date. If you are relocating, international health cover is the right product, and the Indonesian retirement route has its own insurance requirement in its checklist.
