The Umweltplakette: Germany's green sticker, foreign plates included

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

German cities run Umweltzonen — environmental zones — that only vehicles carrying the green Plakette may enter. Per Berlin's Senate environment department, visitors from abroad need the sticker for their vehicle too: the Umweltplakette can be ordered online, in English, through Berlin's vehicle registration authority, using the emissions data from your vehicle papers. One sticker is valid in every German environmental zone.

The zone and the sticker

Berlin's official pages carry the system's logic: the Umweltzone exists to cut diesel soot and nitrogen oxides, and only low-emission vehicles marked with the grüne Plakette may drive in. The sticker is issued against your vehicle's emissions class — determined from the registration papers — and once issued it's valid in all German cities with an environmental zone, not just the one that issued it.

Foreign vehicles: yes, you too — and there's an English route

Berlin's page for foreign vehicles removes the ambiguity: auch Besucher aus dem Ausland, die mit ihrem Fahrzeug nach Berlin kommen, brauchen für ihr Fahrzeug eine Umweltplakette — visitors from abroad need one for their vehicle. The same page links the Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde's online application in English, which issues the sticker if the emissions data can be established from your vehicle papers (a manufacturer's certificate helps where the registration document is thin).

The three-sticker windscreen

Driving a car across the move triangle collects glass decorations: Germany's Plakette, France's Crit'Air, Spain's DGT label — three national systems, each with municipal zones on top. The pattern is identical everywhere: sticker from the official issuer (cheap), zone rules from the city (changing), fines for the unstickered (reliable). Buy all three from official sources before a multi-country drive and the whole topic costs less than lunch.

Common questions

Does my foreign car need an Umweltplakette in Germany?

Yes — Berlin's official page says visitors from abroad need the sticker for their vehicle, and links an English online application through the vehicle registration authority.

Is the sticker valid outside Berlin?

Yes — a Plakette is valid in all German cities with an environmental zone, whichever authority issued it.

What do I need to apply?

Your vehicle papers — the sticker is issued against the emissions data in them; where the foreign registration document doesn't carry it, a manufacturer's certificate for the emissions class fills the gap, per Berlin's guidance.

What happens if I drive in without one?

Environmental-zone enforcement is a standing feature of German city policing — treat the sticker as mandatory kit, ordered before the trip, not a formality to argue at the roadside.
