Malaysia's digital nomad visa: the DE Rantau pass

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified 1 October 2026

Malaysia's nomad route is the DE Rantau pass, run by MDEC and issued as a Professional Visit Pass valid three to twelve months, renewable once for a maximum of 24 months. Income thresholds are USD24,000 a year for tech roles and USD60,000 for non-tech. ⭐ Unlike most Malaysian routes, it does require health insurance.

Visa-ready plans from $962 per adult, billed annually · see your exact price by age.

The rule in writing

“Malaysia’s public system charges foreigners under the Ministry of Health’s published foreigner service rates (Fees Act 1951 fee orders): outpatient RM40, specialist RM120 and emergency RM100 per visit, with inpatient ward and procedure charges on top — so an uninsured long-stay resident pays the full foreigner schedule out of pocket.”

What the pass actually is

DE Rantau is not a visa class of its own. The pass issued is a Professional Visit Pass — Pas Lawatan Ikhtisas — and that framing explains most of its limits.

It is valid for a period between three and twelve months, with the option to renew for a further twelve, allowing a maximum stay of 24 months in total. You do not need to be in Malaysia to apply.

The qualifying work is remote work for a company that is not registered in Malaysia, performed outside of any physical office setting. That is the test, and it rules out the common assumption that a nomad pass lets you take local clients.

The two income thresholds

MDEC splits applicants into two bands, and the gap between them is large.

  • Tech talent or profession — USD24,000 per year minimum.
  • Non-tech talent or profession — USD60,000 per year minimum.

Freelancers and digital content creators are explicitly contemplated. The FAQ addresses the case of someone with no client contract whose income comes from a digital content platform, and the answer is the same threshold: annual income above USD24,000.

What MDEC wants to see is consistency rather than a single large figure. The document list asks for bank statements reflecting regular monthly income with matching income deposits, proof of payment from platforms such as PayPal reflecting consistent income above the threshold, and optionally a letter from an employer confirming remote work status, employment terms and income. Names and income details must be consistent across every file, and everything is submitted as PDF.

⭐ Insurance is a condition of endorsement

This is the part that separates DE Rantau from the rest of the Malaysian map, and it is easy to miss because it appears at the endorsement stage rather than in the eligibility list.

Among the documents required for endorsement, the FAQ lists:

“Valid health insurance policy covering Malaysia (minimum 3-month validity and valid throughout the pass period)”.

Read the wording closely, because it is doing three things:

  • “covering Malaysia” — a geographic test, not a nationality one. It does not say a Malaysian insurer, and it does not say local. An international policy whose area of cover includes Malaysia meets the words as written.
  • “minimum 3-month validity” — a floor on the certificate at the point you submit it.
  • “valid throughout the pass period” — and this is the operative one. A pass granted for twelve months needs cover that runs twelve months. A three-month policy will not carry a twelve-month pass.

Note how different this is from Sarawak's second-home programme, whose document list asks for local medical insurance, and from PVIP, which asks for none at all. Three Malaysian long-stay routes, three different answers.

The endorsement list also includes an Income Tax e-Registration Slip from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), a signed personal bond or declaration form, passport copies, your latest immigration entry stamp, and the eVISA or Visa with Reference where your nationality requires one.

What the pass does not give you

Three limits worth settling before you plan a family move.

Your spouse cannot work. The FAQ answers this in one word: no. A dependant on a DE Rantau pass has no work right in Malaysia.

Dependants are assessed separately. Approval of the principal application does not carry the dependants with it — their applications are judged on their own requirements, and a dependant application can sit pending while the principal is approved.

The approval letter is not entry permission. The FAQ is blunt that entering Malaysia without the Visa with Reference, where your nationality needs one, leaves you unable to complete endorsement and receive the pass. The approval letter alone does not grant permission to enter or remain.

Cover that matches a pass, not a holiday

The valid throughout the pass period condition is the thing to design around, and it is where travel insurance usually fails.

A travel policy is written in weeks and is normally conditioned on a return to a home country. A pass granted for up to twelve months, renewable to 24, needs a certificate whose dates cover the whole period and whose area of cover names Malaysia. That is a different product, and it is the one this site exists to arrange.

Underneath the paperwork is the ordinary reason to hold it. Malaysia charges foreigners at the Ministry of Health's published rates — RM40 outpatient, RM120 specialist, RM100 emergency, with ward and procedure charges on top — and private hospitals charge private rates. For a remote worker whose income stops when they do, the risk is not only the bill.

Common questions

What is the Malaysia digital nomad visa?

It is the DE Rantau pass, administered by MDEC and issued as a Professional Visit Pass. It is valid between three and twelve months with one twelve-month renewal, allowing a maximum stay of 24 months, and covers remote work for a company not registered in Malaysia.

What income do you need for DE Rantau?

A minimum annual income of USD24,000 for tech talent and professions, or USD60,000 for non-tech. Digital content creators earning from a platform rather than under a client contract fall under the USD24,000 threshold.

Does DE Rantau require health insurance?

Yes. The endorsement document list requires a valid health insurance policy covering Malaysia, with a minimum of three months' validity and valid throughout the pass period. A pass issued for twelve months therefore needs twelve months of cover.

Does the insurance have to be Malaysian?

The published wording is a policy covering Malaysia, which is a geographic condition rather than a nationality one. That differs from Sarawak's second-home programme, whose document list asks for local medical insurance.

Can my spouse work on a DE Rantau dependant pass?

No. The FAQ answers that directly. Dependant applications are also assessed separately from the principal's, so approval of the main applicant does not automatically carry dependants through.

Do I have to be in Malaysia to apply?

No, you can apply from outside. But if your nationality requires a Visa with Reference, entering without it means you cannot complete endorsement or receive the pass — the approval letter alone does not grant entry.
