By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Borobudur, the UNESCO World Heritage temple in Magelang, Central Java, is open for climbing the temple structure every day, 09:00–17:00, with tickets booked through the official site ticket.injourneydestination.id. The Borobudur Sunrise visit starts at 04:00, costs Rp 1,000,000 per person and is limited to 100 people a day.

About Borobudur

Borobudur is managed by InJourney Destination Management — PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko. The operator describes it as the largest Buddhist temple in the world, built by the Sailendra dynasty between 780 and 840 AD as a place of worship and pilgrimage.

The monument is arranged in three zones, rising from the visible world to the highest realm: Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu and Arupadhatu.

Borobudur Sunrise, and getting there

The Borobudur Sunrise experience lets you watch dawn from the temple before the site opens to the public. According to the operator:

  • it costs Rp 1,000,000 per person, limited to 100 people a day
  • it starts at 04:00 WIB from the Borobudur Cultural Center (formerly Manohara Borobudur)
  • it includes a wristband ticket, a torch, upanat — the special sandals for the temple area — a professional guide, and breakfast at the Lalitavistara restaurant

To get there from Yogyakarta, the operator says Borobudur buses cost around Rp 10,000 and take about an hour. For anyone living in Java, it's one of the great weekend trips.
