Hospitals in Lombok: what RS and RSUD actually mean

The US Consular Agency's Lombok list opens with a terminology note, which is unusual and useful enough to repeat:

• RS: Rumah Sakit = basic hospital
• RSUD: Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah = regional public hospital

Once you can read the prefix, a list of Indonesian hospital names stops being opaque. RSUD tells you the facility is public and district-run; an RS without the UD is more likely private or mission-run.

Among the facilities listed for Nusa Tenggara Barat:

• RS Grha Ultima Medika — Jl. Majapahit No. 10, Mataram
• RS Katolik St. Antonius — Mataram
• RSUD Lombok Utara — Jl. Tioq Tata Tunaq, Tanjung, North Lombok
• RS Islam Yatofa — Praya, central Lombok

The weight sits in and around Mataram, on the west coast. If you are staying in the south around Kuta or on the Gili islands, that is a real journey — and from the Gilis it begins with a boat.

The Lombok section carries firmer wording than the Bali one, and it is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing: "We assume no responsibility or liability for the professional ability or reputation of, or the quality of services provided by, any medical providers or clinics. Inclusion on this list is in no way an endorsement by the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy."

Take that at face value. It is a list of what exists and where, not an assessment of what is good.

The practical reading for a traveller or resident: Lombok is where you are stabilised, not necessarily where you are treated. Complex cases move — to Bali, and from Bali offshore. Evacuation cover, and whether it includes inter-island transfer, is the part of a policy to check before you go.
