Riding the Jakarta MRT as a newcomer
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
The line and its stations
The MRT is run by PT MRT Jakarta, owned by the Jakarta provincial government, and opened on 24 March 2019. According to the provincial transport agency, it was the first public transport in Indonesia with both underground and elevated track.
The 13 stations, south to north, are: Lebak Bulus, Fatmawati, Cipete Raya, Haji Nawi, Blok A, Blok M, Sisingamangaraja, Senayan, Istora, Bendungan Hilir, Setiabudi, Dukuh Atas and Bundaran Hotel Indonesia.
Each train has six cars carrying up to 1,800 passengers at 80–100 km/h. The trains are called Ratangga, a name taken from the Sutasoma of the Majapahit era.

Fares and how to pay
The provincial government lists MRT fares from Rp 4,000 to Rp 14,000, depending on distance, with trains running 05:00–24:00.
You can tap in with these stored-value cards:
- JakLingko card
- Bank DKI's JakCard
- the MRT Jakarta multi-trip ticket
- Flazz (BCA), e-Money (Mandiri), TapCash (BNI) and Brizzi (BRI)
- the KMT card from KAI Commuter
Or pay with an e-wallet — OVO, DANA, LinkAja, AstraPay, i.saku or blu by BCA Digital — by linking it to the MRT-J app, which then gives you a QR code to enter.

The line links popular areas such as Blok M, Senayan, Dukuh Atas and Bundaran HI. Many of the same stored-value cards are also used on TransJakarta buses — our TransJakarta guide covers which.
The provincial government notes that the MRT will be extended towards East, West and North Jakarta. Fares and services can change, so check the MRT-J app for the latest.
