Getting around Kuala Lumpur by MRT, LRT and Monorail

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Kuala Lumpur's rail network centres on two MRT lines — Kajang (31 stations) and Putrajaya (36 stations) — running every 5 minutes at peak, plus the Kelana Jaya and Ampang LRT lines and the KL Monorail through Bukit Bintang. KL Sentral is the hub, with the KLIA Ekspres running non-stop to both airport terminals.

The MRT lines

According to Malaysia's land public transport agency, APAD, the city has two MRT lines, each running every 5 minutes at peak and 10 minutes off-peak:

  • MRT Kajang Line — from Sungai Buloh through the city centre to Kajang: 51 km and 31 stations, elevated and underground
  • MRT Putrajaya Line — from Sungai Kwasa Damansara through the city centre to Putrajaya: 57.7 km and 36 stations

For timetables and service updates, APAD points to Prasarana's myRapid, which runs the city's MRT, LRT and Monorail services.

The LRT and the Monorail

The LRT is operated by Rapid Rail, part of Prasarana, with two lines listed by APAD:

  • Kelana Jaya Line — Gombak to Putra Heights
  • Ampang Line — Sentul Timur to Ampang and Putra Heights

The KL Monorail, opened on 31 August 2003, runs 8.6 km with 11 stations between KL Sentral and Titiwangsa. It serves inner-city areas including Brickfields, Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit, with connections to other lines at KL Sentral, Muzium Negara, Hang Tuah, Bukit Bintang, Bukit Nanas and Titiwangsa.

APAD gives the journey from KL Sentral to klia2 as 39 minutes.
