Nyepi in Bali: what the Day of Silence means for residents
By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026
What Nyepi is
Nyepi marks the Saka New Year and is a national public holiday in Indonesia — Hari Suci Nyepi, the holy day of silence. For Bali's Hindu community it is the centre of a sequence of ceremonies, which Bali's 2026 joint notice lists as Melasti, Pangrupukan, Sipeng — the day of silence itself, known as Catur Brata Penyepian — and Ngembak Geni.
What makes Nyepi unusual is that the silence applies to everyone on the island, not only to those who observe it. For anyone living in Bali, it's one of the most distinctive days of the year — a whole island, normally busy, falling quiet for a day and a night.

What happens on the day
Each year Bali issues a joint notice — the Seruan Bersama — setting out how the day is observed. The 2026 notice, published by the provincial government, set out:
- All land, sea and air transport providers may not operate, from 06:00 WITA on the day of Nyepi to 06:00 WITA the next day
- Radio and television stations may not broadcast during that time
- mobile operators are asked to switch off mobile data, and TV providers not to distribute broadcasts, while emergency communication services are kept running
- Residents and tourists may not travel or go out, set off firecrackers, use loudspeakers, make noise or use excessive lighting
- accommodation, entertainment and tourism businesses may not promote commercial activities using Nyepi branding
In 2026, Nyepi coincided with takbiran, the eve of Idul Fitri, and the joint notice included arrangements for both communities to observe their holy days side by side.

Because the rules are set by a new notice each year, check the current year's announcement as Nyepi approaches. The 2026 notice is the most recent one published; the 2027 notice hasn't been issued yet. The national holiday list puts Nyepi 2027 on Monday 8 March.
Based on the 2026 rules, a practical checklist:
- Don't plan to travel on Nyepi — with all transport stopped, flights in and out of Bali don't operate for those 24 hours
- Stock up the day before on food, water and anything you'll need, since going out isn't permitted
- Plan for no mobile data — download anything you need in advance
- Keep lights low after dark
- if you're staying in a hotel or villa, ask ahead how it handles the day
Plenty of residents come to treasure it: a day without traffic or screens, and an island that goes properly dark at night.
