Tsunami warnings in Indonesia: the window is minutes

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

The single most important line in the official advice is about time. If a major earthquake or landslide happens close to shore, the Foreign Office says to follow local instructions "bearing in mind that a tsunami could arrive within minutes". That rules out waiting for an official warning as a strategy. The earthquake is the warning, and the response is to move inland or uphill immediately.

Why the timing changes the advice

Most people picture a tsunami warning system: an alert, a siren, time to react. For a distant earthquake that is roughly how it works. For a local one it is not.

The FCDO is explicit: "if a major earthquake or landslide occurs close to shore, follow the instructions of local authorities, bearing in mind that a tsunami could arrive within minutes."

Indonesia sits where it sits. The same advice notes that "earthquakes happen regularly" and lists tsunamis among the natural disasters the country experiences routinely. With a near-shore event, official warnings may simply not outrun the wave.

The practical translation is unglamorous: if you are on the coast and the shaking is strong enough that standing is difficult, treat that as the warning and move.

What to know before you need it

Preparation here is about thirty seconds of thought on arrival rather than any equipment.

  • Know which way is inland or uphill from where you are sleeping. On a beach in the dark, that is not obvious.
  • Ask the hotel about evacuation routes. Coastal properties in Indonesia generally have a plan; guests generally have not asked.
  • Do not go to look. Receding water is not a spectacle, it is the wave gathering.
  • Follow local authorities once instructions exist — they enforce zones and know the terrain.

Communications and power can fail after a major earthquake, so a plan agreed with the people you are travelling with beats a plan that depends on phones working.

Where insurance sits in this, honestly

Not where people expect, so it is worth being direct.

International health cover responds to injury and illness. It is not disaster cover, it does not make you safer, and it is not what gets you off a beach. In an event of this kind the thing that matters is where you go in the first two minutes.

What cover does do is afterwards, and in Indonesia that mostly means evacuation. Serious trauma is referred offshore, hospital capacity can be overwhelmed in an affected region, and the FCDO's baseline assessment of local medical care is that it "can be poor and some medical tests cannot be performed reliably".

So read the evacuation limit, and check whether it covers domestic transfer as well as international.

What we can and cannot help with

To be clear about scope: we do not sell travel-disruption or cancellation cover — delayed flights and washed-out plans are a different product. We are an insurance introducer for international health and life cover for people.

Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.

Common questions

How much warning is there for a tsunami in Indonesia?

Possibly none. The FCDO advises that after a major earthquake or landslide close to shore, a tsunami could arrive within minutes. For a near-shore event the earthquake itself is the warning.

What should I do if I feel an earthquake on the coast?

Move inland or uphill immediately rather than waiting for an official alert, then follow local authority instructions once they exist. Strong shaking near the coast is itself the signal.

Are earthquakes common in Indonesia?

Yes. The FCDO states that earthquakes happen regularly and lists tsunamis among the natural disasters Indonesia experiences routinely, alongside floods, landslides and volcanic eruptions.

Does travel insurance cover a tsunami?

Health cover responds to injury and illness rather than acting as disaster cover. What matters afterwards is the evacuation clause, since serious trauma in Indonesia is referred offshore and regional hospital capacity can be overwhelmed.

How should I prepare when staying on the coast?

Work out which way is inland or uphill from where you sleep, ask the property about evacuation routes, agree a plan with anyone you are travelling with, and never go to look at receding water.
