The rule in writing
“Indonesia’s national health scheme (JKN/BPJS Kesehatan) defines participants as every person INCLUDING foreigners who have worked in Indonesia for at least 6 months (Perpres 82/2018 Art. 1(2)). The statutory obligation attaches to working foreigners; a retiree or a remote worker paid by a foreign employer is not the case that article describes, and private cover is what serves the years the scheme does not.”

The number
Call 118 and ask for an ambulance. That is the medical emergency number the UK Foreign Office publishes in its Indonesia travel advice, and it is the one to have written down somewhere that does not depend on your phone being unlocked.
The full set the Foreign Office publishes: ambulance 118, fire 112, police 110.
Save them before you need them. Everything else on this page is about the part that comes after the call connects.

What actually arrives
Ambulance provision in Indonesia is uneven in a way that surprises people arriving from Europe or Australia. In central Jakarta and the developed parts of Bali, response is reasonable and private hospitals run their own fleets. Outside those areas, distances are long, traffic is genuinely obstructive, and the vehicle that arrives may be a transport ambulance rather than a mobile intensive care unit.
A practical consequence: many long-term residents in Bali keep the direct number of a specific private hospital alongside 118, because calling the hospital you intend to be treated at can be faster than the general line.
Which hospital, and why it matters
An emergency admission decides a great deal for you. A public hospital will stabilise you. A private international-standard hospital will stabilise you, communicate in English, and be equipped to hand over to an evacuation team if one is needed.
If you hold insurance, the hospital's willingness to bill your insurer directly rather than demand payment up front is the single most useful feature you can have on a bad day. It is worth knowing, before anything happens, which hospitals near you settle directly with your policy.
Who pays — the part worth planning
Indonesia's national scheme, JKN/BPJS, is built around participants that its own regulation defines as including foreigners who have worked here at least six months. A retiree or a remote worker paid from abroad is not that person, so the bill arrives privately.
Routine emergency care is affordable by Western standards. The exposure is the escalation. Where a case needs capability Indonesia cannot provide, the pathway runs to Singapore, and the UK Foreign Office is blunt about the cost: medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of pounds.
That is the number an emergency plan has to survive — not the ambulance, the aeroplane.

A plan that works at three in the morning
Emergencies are not the moment to discover what your policy does. Before you need any of it:
- Save 118 and the direct line of the private hospital you would choose.
- Keep your policy number and the insurer's 24-hour assistance line somewhere reachable without a laptop.
- Check your cover includes evacuation and repatriation, not only treatment where you are.
- Confirm whether your policy is travel or residence cover. A long-stay resident holding travel insurance is the most common failure we see, and it surfaces at exactly this moment.
Our plans are international and include the assistance line that arranges the transfer rather than reimbursing it afterwards. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.
Honest limits: Cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, including conditions you did not know about. We disclose this before you request a quote. Consulates keep discretion, and requirements can change. We show the published rule and its source; the final decision is the consulate’s.
