The rule in writing
“Greece’s national (type D) visas require travel medical insurance with minimum cover of €30,000, valid for the whole Schengen area and the full duration of stay, covering emergency care, hospitalisation, and repatriation.”

The NHS and your move
NHS entitlement is based on living in the UK. Once you move to Greece, that entitlement doesn't travel with you; it does not cover your life there, however long you've paid in.
Since Brexit, UK citizens staying beyond the short-stay window need a national (type D) visa. Most non-working movers and retirees use the FIP route; remote workers use the digital-nomad route. Either way, insurance sits inside the visa file itself; it's not an optional extra.
A GHIC or EHIC won't help here. It's built for necessary care during a temporary stay, not for residence, and it isn't what the visa file asks for. See how Greece's healthcare system actually works for residents.
Greece's two moments
Greece's visa rule is specific and published: your policy must cover a minimum of €30,000, valid across the whole Schengen area, for the full duration of your stay, including emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation (mfa.gr, verified July 2026). This is the number your FIP or digital-nomad application is checked against; full detail in our FIP visa insurance guide.
There's a second moment later, at permit stage, and it works differently. From what applicants report, it can come down to office discretion rather than a fixed list; a case question, not a checkbox. We can't promise how any individual office will read a policy at that stage.
What we arrange for UK movers
We arrange residence-grade cover built to clear the €30,000 minimum with room to spare, with limits from US$1,000,000 to US$2,000,000. Cover starts the same day, with no medical exam and a 14-day cooling-off period. Children aged 0-17 are covered at a flat rate.
Being plain about limits: pre-existing conditions are excluded, treatment in the US isn't covered, and new applicants are accepted up to age 70 (or 80 on the Essential plan); worth knowing early if you're moving in your seventies. One insurer covers all eight of our destination countries, so the same policy moves with you if your plans change. See real Greece insurance prices by age for exact numbers.
Before anything is bought, a person confirms the certificate for your office before you buy; because permit-stage requirements are a case question, not a checkbox. Start with a quote, or work through our move checklist first.
Honest limits: Cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, including conditions you did not know about. We disclose this before you request a quote. Consulates keep discretion, and requirements can change. We show the published rule and its source; the final decision is the consulate’s.
