Hospitals in Makassar: the referral point for Sulawesi

What the consular list names in and around Makassar
The US Mission in Indonesia maintains a medical assistance list with a Sulawesi and Maluku section. In Makassar itself it names, among others:
- Grestelina Hospital — Panakkukang, Makassar City
- RS Pelamonia — Jl. Jend. Sudirman No. 27, Ujung Pandang, Makassar
Beyond the city it lists regional facilities including RSUD Andi Makkasau in Parepare, RS Bintang Laut in Palopo, RSUD Barru in Barru Regency and RS Hapsah in Bone — plus separate provision listed for Southeast Sulawesi around Kendari.

Reading the names tells you the tier
Indonesian hospital names carry their own classification once you know the prefix, and the consular list spells it out.
- RS — Rumah Sakit: a hospital, often private or mission-run.
- RSUD — Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah: a regional public hospital, district-run.
Scan the Sulawesi list with that in mind and the geography of capacity becomes obvious: named private hospitals cluster in Makassar, while the outlying entries are largely RSUD — public, regional, and built for a domestic population rather than for foreign patients with international policies.
60-second check
Not sure the policy you have meets your destination's written rule? Run it through the policy check now, before you build the rest of the file around it.
Check my policyWhat that means if you are not in the city
Sulawesi is large, mountainous and slow to cross. The distances between the towns on that list are not city distances.
If you are diving in the Wakatobi or Bunaken, working in a regency, or travelling in the north, the realistic sequence is local stabilisation followed by transfer — to Makassar, and for anything complex from there onward. Nationally the FCDO warns that the standard of local medical care "can be poor and some medical tests cannot be performed reliably".
The practical question is therefore the evacuation clause, not the outpatient limit — and specifically whether your policy covers domestic inter-island transfer as well as international evacuation. Those are not always the same thing.
What we can and cannot help with
To be clear about scope: we do not recommend individual hospitals, and nothing here is medical advice. We are an insurance introducer for international health and life cover for people.
What we can do is the cover behind the visit — in particular whether your insurer settles directly with the facility you reach. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and cover is governed by the Regency Assurance policy wording.
