Austria student visa insurance: cover for your permit file

By Covered Abroad Research Desk · Last verified July 2026

Austria's student residence permit needs insurance covering all risks with claims payable in Austria; a standard travel policy will not satisfy the file. We arrange international cover valid in Austria, certificate worded for the authority, partner arrangements confirmed July 2026. A person reviews your permit type first; if it does not fit, we say so before you pay.

Visa-ready plans from $721 per adult, billed annually · see your exact price by age.

The rule in writing

“Austrian residence permits require health insurance that provides benefits in Austria and covers all risks, with claims payable in Austria — a stricter standard than a Schengen travel policy.”

What the student permit file asks for

Austria's student residence permit file asks for insurance that covers all risks, with claims payable in Austria; stricter than a Schengen travel policy. It's assessed case by case, so certificate wording matters more than any brochure, and a person reviews your permit type against what's required (a student permit is judged differently than a settlement permit). Wording specifics are in our certificate wording guide.

The timing gap for students

There's a timing gap for students: the permit file needs compliant cover in place before any arrival-linked options exist. Once settled, students who move onto statutory or university-linked cover within Austria's healthcare system typically do so later; a separate step, not a substitute for what the file requires first. Because assessment is case by case, confirm what your file needs on our checklist before relying on any local option.

What we arrange for students

We arrange the rail: international cover valid in Austria, all risks, claims payable in Austria, with the certificate worded for the authority (partner arrangements confirmed July 2026). Plans include limits from US$1,000,000 to US$2,000,000, same-day cover, no medical exam, and a 14-day cooling-off period; pre-existing conditions are excluded and US treatment isn't covered; see real Austria prices by age or compare with expat health insurance. Start a quote or run a policy check; if your permit type doesn't fit our arrangement, we say so before you pay.

Honest limits: Cover is worldwide but excludes treatment in the United States. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, including conditions you did not know about. We disclose this before you request a quote. Consulates keep discretion, and requirements can change. We show the published rule and its source; the final decision is the consulate’s.

Common questions

Does a normal travel insurance policy satisfy Austria's student permit requirement?

No. Austria's student residence permit needs insurance covering all risks with claims payable in Austria, which a standard Schengen travel policy does not meet. It's assessed case by case, so we check the certificate wording against what the authority expects before you buy.

What happens if my permit type doesn't fit your insurance arrangement?

A person reviews your permit type first. If it doesn't fit our arrangement, we tell you before you pay; we don't sell a certificate that won't hold up with the authority.

Can I just wait and join Austria's student health insurance after I arrive?

Not for the permit file. Students who move onto statutory or university-linked cover generally do so after settling in, but the residence permit application needs compliant cover in place first; that's a separate, later step.

How much does student visa insurance for Austria cost?

It depends on age and plan, so there's no single flat number here. See our Austria prices by age page for current costs before you apply.
